Adam is probably telling the truth, but I think he's also using it to stay relevant. He's a big horror fan and directing this movie was like the peak experience of his career. So he's milking it for all its worth. Adam also seems a bit delusional about the quality of his work.

I haven’t followed the lawsuits and stuff but from what I can tell Cunningham seems full of really bad ideas and seems to HATE what Friday the 13th turned into: Jason in a hockey mask killing people.
That’s why people watch these movies. No hockey mask, no Jason.
