Criminally underrated film...

I was 12-13 when I saw this film, so about Jack's age... I was going through my own personal struggles (bullying, depression, etc.) and this film hit VERY close to the heart. I identified with a lot of Jack's personality traits, struggles, and just felt intensely emotionally affected by the events of the movie. It felt like I was experiencing the trauma of Jack's (and Dylan's) childhood firsthand, thus it was representative of my life in so many ways.

I wonder if this movie would have done better in theaters today, just over 30 years later, amidst the 21st century woes, particularly in the tween/teen age groups. I think it would still hold up pretty well.

YES...JACK THE BEAR IS AN AMAZING MOVIE THAT GETS VERY LITTLE ATTENTION...THE HIGHLIGHT OF DEVITO'S CAREER IN MY OPINION.

Good, revealing post Rev. I’m going to put this movie on my watch list because of what you wrote.

Ii was 11 when this came out. It's a fantastic film.
It came out at a great time in film for dramas. We were lucky to see it at an age where the world was becoming more complex for us (pre-teens of the time)

I don't think it would fair better if it were released today. People are probably too ginned up on politics, social media, and series/verses to appreciate a film like this.

that's a true shame... Kids these days would benefit a lot from this movie, IMHO.
