Was Guiseppe the dad or stepdad of Gerry Conlon?

the movie alludes to him being a stepfather but the book says nothing about that. anyone know?

reply

When does the movie alude to him being a step father? He was his biological dad no question.

reply

He was his real father, always was, always will be.
Where did you get the impression he wasn't?

You may be remembering the scene where Guiseppe was talking to the prison guard about where his name came from. He said that there was an Italian shoe shop owner named "Guiseppe" where his mother lived, and that his mother liked the name so much that she named her son after him. The prison guard asked if his mother and the shoe shop owner were lovers (implying that Guiseppe may have been the offspring of an illicit affair), but Guiseppe denied that.

Wow is it the accent or are you people incapable of basic comprehension. the name came from an Italian ice cream maker...

Wow, is this worth calling people names over? It wasn't a dumb question.

I think the OP is actually referring to one of their verbal fights when they first get to prison, when Guiseppe shouts at Gerry, "When are you going to treat me like your real father?" I actually wondered the same thing at that point. And no, I didn't have trouble understanding the accent.

Guiseppe was Gerry's biological father. At the beginning of reading these posts I was confused as to how anyone could think he was his step-father. But now I can see how it'd be confused.
When Guiseppe Conlon is arrested and taken to the cell where Gerry is, Gerry suffers an emotional outburst, he then mocks Guiseppe's parenting skills and his own up bringing. He uses the comparison of the other father's at his football game (as a child) referring to him as 'Poor Guiseppe'.
After Guiseppe slaps him he shouts "Hit me like a real father" which is nothing more than a dig at Guiseppe being what he percieved as a bad parent.

reply

I had thought that Guiseppe was his stepdad as well because he called him Guiseppe rather than 'Da' most of the time. And there seemed to be that kind of stepson-stepdad tension between them.

No, they were biological father & son.
