Confusion - Names in England, Ireland, Scotland...
Is Gareth tradionally a male or female name? In this movie it was female, but in "Four Weddings And A Funeral" it seemed to be a male name.

shareI think it's mostly a male name, but I quite like it for a girl.
It's ben fairly common in my family on the Irish side, (from Belfast) to give the girls boy names, or a female version of a boy name.. My great Aunt was named Tomasena after my great grandfather Tomas, we called her Ena.. my grandmother's middle name was Garrett, which I believe is a man's name. Georgina is popular too. I have a cousin named Lonsdale, (which is my Nan's maiden name), we call her Dale. My Irish neighbour is named Jerry, she's female.. comes from Derry.
I think it's rather interesting.. I am trying to convince my future husband to name our daughter Garrett if we ever have one, but so far not having much luck!
You're Perfect Yes It's True.... But Without Me You're Only You
Going to be honest, I have never heard of a female Gareth or Garrett lol and I'm born and bred Northern irish. As for Jerry from Derry(yeo!), any females i've met who have that name usually spell it Geri..and its usually because its short for Geraldine. I think its more popular for females to be given the female equivalent of a male name rather than just having a male name, although to be honest I can't think of many females with this type of name either lol

You are quite right drunkn_munky she is a Geraldine. I got some of her mail by mistake last year so I guess she is a Geri not Jerry!
and yes probably far more common for a feminine version of a male name, and I by no means meant to imply that everyone in Northern Ireland gives their daughters boy names or the equivalent. It's just popular in my family! LOL!
I like it, as it's different, I also prefer older names, Violet, Jack etc. James for a girl, Garrett for a girl. Hubby says no thank you to both of those LOL! But we agree on Violet and Jack!

Oh no, I didn't think you were implying anything lol.
Personally there are only a few male names that I would consider for a girl.
James is a nice one, Garrett I'm not overly familiar with tbh lol. I like Alex or Alec for a girl to.

Gareth is her middle name, (Jean Gareth Pierce), apparently sh e took the name whilst young.
I've no idea why, perhaps to better progress in the rather boys club that is law?
I know P.D James uses her initials because her publisher told her no one would buy her books if they knew she was a woman. (A lot of woman authors do this).
