I think Pete Postlethwaite, he put so much heart and strength into his character. Lewis was also tremendous. Thompson was good but a bit overrated in my opinion, she was definately nomination worthy, but I dont think she was anywhere near as good as Pete and DDL.

I think Lewis, Postlewhaite, and Thomson were all marvelous. I particuarly loved Thompson in this, but I wish her part were bigger (yes, I'm biased toward her...I adore her, and simply think she is the screen's all-time gem. Just love her).
My question is, why the hell isn't Postelwhaite's listing in the credits way higher up...like....number two???? The top of the cast listing doesn't say "listed in order of appearance", so, I'm confused as to why clearly the second lead in this film isn't listed at the top?

I disagree. I love how Guiseppe was portrayed in the film. In fact, the reason he was portrayed the way that he was, was because Jim Sheridan wanted to break the stereotype of the Irish father is constantly drunk, rather than concerned for his own family's welfare.
All too often, Catholics --& for that matter most Christians--are portrayed in a negative light, on both the big & the small screens, & Guiseppe was shown in a way that Christians are really supposed to behave!!

Great points have been made, but I'd like to give a special mention to John Lynch who portrays Paul Hill. I've always liked the job he does in every film I have seen by him.
