One of my top ten all time favorites
In response to the other posts...I can see how this movie would appeal to a small audience and therefore not be first in line for a DVD release. You'd have to be familiar with the beliefs of Italian Catholics immersed in the cult of the saints to grasp all the references in order to not see this as a weird trippy movie.
The movie hinges on the viewer knowing the importance of the references - e.g. common signs from saints such as the blessed mother and saint teresa include roses and the smell of roses. Indications that someone is a saint includes roses appearing, someone handing you a rose as a sign, or the smell of roses when none are present.
I made some of my friends watch it and now they think I have a totally whack taste in movies - but it remains on my al time top list - and - after watching it I look out for other projects the actors take on - especially D'Inofrio, Ulman and Taylor.
I would love to meet the person who came up with this story -I wonder if he or she knows the same characters I grew up with.
Finally, I just loved the ending - through the tragedy of the daughter's death, the father reveals how great his love was for his wife.
