So...Last great Parody Movie?

Rewatching Hot Shots+Part Deux, and comparing it today's standards(Meet the Spartans), it just seems that somewhere they lost the ball. I mean, they parodied some movies, but at least they had their own storyline and jokes, not just showing the EXACT same scenes and flash a pop culture, while having Carmen Electra pop up somewhere.

Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Walk Hard could all be considered parody movies.

The films though really dont parody on the same lines as Hot shots, and the crapfest of the 2000's. They make their own plot and stuff and essentially take some of those elements from the genre and not really spoof a film. But maybe im biased by the fact that these movies are terrific.

Besides the other movies referenced, I think that you're generally right in that and was even thinking it myself as I rewatched it the first time since childhood.

I think Fatal Instinct (1993, with Armand Assante) was the last good movie parody. Everything after that was bad. Wrongfully Accused wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good either.

reply

Agreed, caught this on Sky the other night and laughed my ass off. I couldn't even sit through Disaster Movie, those guys truly should be ashamed of themselves!

i personally would consider scary movie 3+4 and austin powers as good parody movies, but they're not the same as hot shots and movies like that were, i agree ;]

hot fuzz and shaun of the dead are more than just parodies... they're masterpieces... ;D
hot shots for example had just stupid, but brilliant, humor. hot fuzz and shaun of the dead had intelligent yet stupid, brilliant humor... lol hope you understand what i mean?

I really liked Robin Hood: Men in tights :)

Not Another Teen Movie is a great parody in my opinion... better than the Scary Movies and lots of other stuff they've been making in the last decade.

reply

I really liked "Mafia!" I know it's stupid but I thought some parts of it were hilarious. Otherwise, I love Hot Shots part Deux....the newer ones just suck

they always throw someone like Carmen Electra because she is hot and the cameo is just so obvious and pointless. On the other hand, the cameos in this movie weren't just so the star could make a quick buck and the movie could have that celeb on the billing (ie, that handman from that old PBS show...Bob Villa??)

EDIT: I also thought "Scary Movie" was good (the first one only)

reply

From the best old school parody movies, Wrongfully Accused was the last one. The new generation parodies, only Scary Movie is worth watching, the rest is just horrible and awful.

reply

well you can't really compare Hot Shots Part Deux to Meet the Spartans. That's just horribly unfair =)

this movie is one of the last great parodies
I think the best recent one was Scary Movie 4. Love that movie =)

but this movie is definitely in the top 5 best parodies of all time

The only good recent parody I've seen is Scary Movie 3 and while that was funny, it didn't even come close to the hilarity of Hot Shots 2.

I agree with the OP, I think they've just lost their magic nowadays :(

reply

Aye, SM3 was good but not on par with either of the Hot Shots flicks.

Also, someone mentioned Walk Hard and I think that it is the truly last great parody thus far.

reply

Wrongfully Accused was fantastic and trully the last of its kind

I actually liked Robin Hood: Men in tights & Dracula: Dead and Loving It. I'm a huge fan of Mel Brooks and they are very enojyable small comedies (seeing them as a kid also helps). And IMHO Not Another Teen Movie is a great watch and has good subtle humour between the more obvious and teen oriented flatulence gags.
