Beating up the eldest boy/Murray and the fire....?!

Why does Kathy Bates character beat up the eldest boy Shane for mouting off @ Christmas but lets one of the younger boys, Murray, off the hook and actually tells him it's OK he set the house on fire?

reply

Because she realized the pain she had been inflicting on Shayne, not just physically but emotionally, when he was cleaning her wounds and she told him not to ever beat a woman, not to beat anybody because it hurts. And he said, I know. She realized how badly she had treated him. Murray didn't intentionally set the house on fire, it was an incredibly stupid accident. I actually figured the outhouse would explode.

when I 1st saw it I said the same thing.but now I think about it -it was a very careless mistake-no 1 was hurt so I don't think he should have got a beating

He was never told it was “Ok” to set the house on fire, as burning down the house was not his agenda. His agenda was merely a ceremonial burning of the outhouse he hated so much…he just didn’t understand the concepts of ashes that can float and set other things on fire. Beating Murray for the accidental house fire would’ve been cruel.

He was already feeling TREMENDOUS guilt for his decision to burn down the outhouse and beating him probably would’ve instilled a belief in his adolescent mind that his mom hated him for doing so. The house burning down to the ground and his family losing everything (again) was enough to make him realize the consequences of his actions. He needed to be told and shown he was forgiven and still loved.

totally irrelevant, but one of the kids fell off the roof and got a nail in their back..that's the little of what i can remember of the film. i really wan tot watch it again. but freaky stuff!

I wish they taught shopping in school; lets wear make up so the boys will like us

What I wanna know is why she beat him when he had a perfectly legit reason for complaining. The little brat--who was great in A Perfect World :)--scribbled all over his textbook for class and didn't even KNOW what he did with his homework! The mother should laid the little one out instead to teach him some respect for other people's things.

I spent my entire childhood growing up. What a waste.

A lot of the time I think she was beating Shane because he reminded her so mcuh of her husband and she was taking a lot out on him.
FYI, Murray is the one who fell from the roof AND the one who set the fire.
