6.6 is a little high

Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong are usually pretty good(and I like the little kid from A Perfect World), but they had very little to work with in this excruciatingly cliched and predictable bore.

I'd give it 4 out of 10 stars.

I spent my entire childhood growing up. What a waste.

Hmmm...Just saw this last night. I wasn't bored by it nor would I say it was a bad film, but I agree it was sooooooooo predictable. I knew immediately what was coming next:

1. When Murray went up on the ledge to hammer nails [he would fall]
2. When Francis came home all beat up [son would avenge]
3. When Murray set the outhouse on fire [the house would follow]
4. When they were standing around looking at the house in ruins [the townspeople would all drive up at once to pitch in - and brought pots and pans?- though I have no idea how they thought she'd use them or store them at present with no house at all]

I thought the performances were only okay. Kathy Bates as the strong bossy type has been done to death.

"I hope she didn't take my attempt to destroy her too seriously."

I agree it's not the most original script, but I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Unlike a lot of movies I've seen lately, the time just flew by.

I suppose it might have been more "meaningful" or "real" if Frances had gone off drinking, chasing after men, and deserting her kids, but that's also become a very predictable storyline. This is a "small" movie, it doesn't have any pretensions of being anything beyond a heartwarming story. It's all about how it was done, and it was done very well. Kathy Bates in particular made Frances a very real person.
