Possible Plot Hole with the Grenade Fuse

At the end, when Lance Henriksen unscrews the fuse assembly from the grenade, he holds it near the now opened top of the grenade. The primer sparks, igniting the explosive and the grenade goes off. But why would it do that, since the expanding gases from the ignition would be able to just blow out of the opening? What causes a grenade to explode is the hot expanding gases blowing the grenade walls open from the inside. With the top open, they would just be able to escape harmlessy.

Remember the part where Jean-Claude Van Damme punches a snake in the face?

It's an electric drill. You get me, you kill me!

reply

wrong. the fuse ignites the explosive inside the grenade shell which when ignited, is what blows open a grenade. the unscrewed rod houses the striker primer and fuse only.

reply

Grenades use high explosive, which will explode whether it is confined by the casing or not. If it was blackpowder or smokeless powder instead, it may behave as you describe.
