'Hard Target' Makes 'Bloodsport' Look Like a Freakin' Masterpiece

This movie was painful to watch. As the movie went along, it got worse and worse. I can't blame Van Damme. He's completely miscast!! Steven Seagal would have been a better fit, but I guess Seagal wanted more money than they could pay him.

It doesn't matter. His presence would not have made this movie much better. To do that you would have to get rid of John Woo. No wonder why I don't see his name on anything anymore. He's an awful director! He's directed over 30 movies and "The Killer" and "Face/Off" were the only good ones he's made.

Hasta la vista J. Woo.

Of course I have seen Hard Boiled.

John Woo is an awful director and incredibly overrated.

You say that like your opinion matters...

reply

Obviously, my opinion mattered to you, because you took the time to read and respond.

LMAO!!

I think John Woo tried to cater to American audiences too much. His Chinese movies feel more "at home". I've seen Hard Target a bunch of times and I hardly remember anything about the plot or any lines of dialogue.

i couldnt agree more! the mororcycle sequence was awfull and before i got to that part i allready knew what was coming! every scene was just like every american action flick ever! no hard feelings towards every american action flick at all intended! but when they started shooting with a machine gun.... and every bullet exploded behind the poor horse i started feeling this was a comedy more than an action thriller infact i had this feeling waaaay before that scene it must have been intentional??? the only, ONLY redeming scene was lance going whoops!!! at the end, they even added a little old wild west in a scene right before the old factory, and in the factory every bullet, shotgun blast explode in glory wow this is a comedy, nothing more, me and my mom laughed so hard watching the same old scenes we have seen in every action flick before this movie! so thanks Jhon woo it was funny but not dramatic or anything else! comedy? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Hard Target is *beep* awesome.... with good story and action sequences
It's much better than overproduced action movies today! If you don't like it, than don't watch it...

Hard target is a really really bad movie. 3/10. John Woo's US films are atrocious.

I coldn't agree more. There is nothing at all realistic about this movie, it is much more like a parody than an actual action movie. If Mel Brooks decided to make an action movie it would be something like this. There's no need for me to touch on the motorcycle scene, but Wilford Brimley thoroughly destroying his living quarters without even harming a single bad guy was just as ridiculous. This is an entertaining movie, just like Hell Comes to Frogtowne is entertaining, but both are superbly bad.

Well plenty of action movies aren't all that realistic. But I reckon this is one of Van Damme's best; probably because John Woo directed. Love all the typical Woo flourishes; doves, slow motion (as against hand held rapid fire edits), stand-offs whilst reloading etc. I miss Woo's Hollywood movies.

reply

It was the first example of the Chow Yun Fat Rule; i.e., Asians running around shooting guns in slow motion with flames and doves everywhere look cool, but white people look ridiculous doing the same thing. Tom Cruise found this out in MI2. Hard Target is pretty stupid, but it's entertaining.

Personally, I want to know what you've got against Bloodsport! You get Bolo Yeung at his most intimidating, JCVD at his most overtly homoerotic, and if you get bored, you can try and figure out what Forrest Whittaker is doing in this movie.

Bloodsport is a masterpiece, as is Kickboxer.
