"I don't mate the rules, mate" - - An American using mate?

I've noticed it starting to creep into American posts on facebook, normally in a bad way "Yeah good one, mate", but besides that, I didn't think americans ever used it.

But here we've got an american saying it. I wonder if they actually say that. Or is it a sailor thing?

SOmebody here said it to me.

I dont think it should matter if you like it especially if your from a western world anyway.

Its a positive term anyway.

Even weirder is him using the word "mate" twice in that sentence.
