What does it mean to "see his shadow"?...

I don't understand the terminology around the Groundhog "seeing his shadow"...What does that mean exactly? How would you know if a groundhog seen his shadow or not? Do they ask him? And what if his shadow is facing east but he's looking west...but glanced east quickly at one point...how do u know if he actually "seen" the shadow?

Or are they just saying that if a shadow is present, then the groundhog has "seen it"?

reply

If you had read the article in the other thread you wouldn't need to ask. 🦜

That link didn't answer my question whatsoever. Have trouble with reading comprehension?

reply

Yah, I see that you've "trouble with reading comprehension". 🧦

reply

It's just for fun. A groundhog can't see his shadow and then inform people of it. hahaha...

It's a tradition that's been going on for decades. For the most part, it's a festival that takes place at Gobler's Knob in Punxsutawney.

reply

And now the same in French, please. 😉

Edit to add (from the article)
"Phil's actual prediction, however, takes place ahead of time in a place called Gobbler's Knob,
a small hill just outside of the town, and has done so each year since 1887."

C’est juste pour le plaisir. Une marmotte ne peut pas voir son ombre et en informer les gens. hahaha...

Merci!
Now you only have to correct the spelling of "Gobbler's Knob".
And that this tradition is going on for almost 140 years.

reply

Recorded history goes back that far? I also just now learned we landed on the moon. Wow, I got a lot to learn. Apparently, some dude named Christopher Columbus discovered America.... holy crap! 😲

And you are correct about the spelling of Knob Gobbler. I'm glad you know how to spell that.

-- Again, the article and comment above answers these things...
What Groundhog Day is
Where it's held
How often it's held
How long it's been being held
The purpose of the prediction

-- What it does NOT answer is...
HOW DO THEY DETERMINE WHAT A GROUNDHOG SEES?!?!?! Which was my original question!!! Somehow you don't understand the difference between what the article states and what I was asking with my question. Luckily, it's been answered by an adult already, so I'm good now.

reply

I know what it is, I know what it's about. I'm asking how they determine whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow? They can't ask him. So how do they know?

reply

Read the article...Link above.

And stickman38 already answered your question.
Completely from his memory. 😈

reply

Yep, I read the article yesterday, way before you guys posted it...it doesn't answer specifically what I'm asking.

Things I already know/things that you guys keep repeating:
What Groundhog Day is
Where it's held
How often it's held
How long it's been being held
The purpose of the prediction
The link to the article
Etc, etc, etc.

Things I still don't understand:
HOW DO THEY DETERMINE WHAT A GROUNDHOG SEES?!?!?! You can't ask it. Who's making the determination of who sees what? What if his shadow is east but he looks west? I don't get it. Does a groundhog react to his shadow and I'm just not aware of it?! How is the determination made whether or not an animal seen something in particular, in this case a shadow??

reply

It's presumed that if his shadow is in front of him he'll see it automatically, that's all.

reply

Thank you. Dear God, that was like pulling teeth. I think I was talking to two 3-year-olds there.

reply

You're a fucking hypocrite and liar. 🧦

Socky meeting. 🧦🧦

And I'm neither a guy nor "guys". ☻

reply

Shut the fuck up, right wing troll. I initially respected your request to leave you alone, but no longer.

reply

🤣...a sock doesn't respect anything.

And which of your accounts did I ask to leave me alone? 🧦 ☺

reply

I only have one account.

reply

Yah, yah.

reply

Got any evidence?

reply

'Source, please!' ☺

Btw. LMA doesn't mean 'leave me alone'. 🙃

reply

It was the first result on Urban Dictionary. WTF does it mean then? I'm not in your head, "buddy".

reply

The first result isn't always the best. ☺

Bye, socky. 🧦

The groundhog himself isn't really important - if it's sunny, it means 6 more weeks of winter. If it's overcast, well...

Using a groundhog isn't important for two reasons - there's nothing scientific about this and, as you said, the groundhog doesn't talk or otherwise communicate so the interpretation of the shadow is left to humans.

I still have it on my History tab. If you're so certain, let's place a bet. I'll give you 5 to 1 odds that I can prove that I read that article on Saturday morning. My $50,000 to your $10,000. We'll take it to court. Whaddya say? (Let me guess...you don't even have $10, much less 10K!)

That article didn't address diddly-poo about specifically what I was asking. You not thinking I read that article makes me think you STILL don't understand what I was asking! Because it's not in there, at all. Seriously, you're about 13 years old right? How's my aim?

reply

You want to prove with a "History tab" when you supposedly did read the article.
Hilarious! ☺
What do you think would be the competent court? 🏢

Your repeated (false) assumptions about my age make me feel young again.
Poor child, me. 👶

reply

You're so dumb, it would take two of you to get any dumber!

Uh, yeah, the your browsing history is recorded by your computer and you can look up exactly when you went to a particular site or article. It's been used in court cases many, many times already. Any other bright comments, Professor??

reply

Remember to protocol your current system clock. ⏰
Then you need an eyewitness to prove that you've read the article.

Spare me your Lala-Filmboards-insults "dumb"..."dumber". 🦜
And answer the question, which you conveniently ignored:
What do you think would be the competent court? 🏢
