(Spoilers) Why did Kimble put the guns in the mailbox toward the end?

I really liked this movie, though it's been a long time since I've seen it. One thing I remember being confused by was Kimble dropping the two handguns in a mailbox after the subway fight and before he confronts the doctor. Why not keep them on hand for the fight with Nichols?

The only option I can think of is that he didn't want to be implicated in the subway cop's death if the police picked him up. Then again, it shouldn't be that hard for them to figure out he didn't do it.

As upset and angry as anyone would be in the same situation, Kimble mainly wanted to prove his innocence. Shooting Nichols would have been destroying key evidence, not to mention making Kimble look even more like an enraged lunatic. Being as he was in enough trouble, he disposed of the guns in a safe and easily retrievable place.

It's like the other guy said. Though personally I think he should've left the gun on the train as Sykes wasn't wearing gloves when shooting the cop and the cops would find the gun and the unconscious Sykes. Then run the gun for fingerprints, find that Sykes' prints are on them, then after the bullet in the dead cop is removed and put into evidence, they'll know Sykes killed him. I really don't get why he took them and got his own finger prints on them thus making it seem like he shot the cop.

Richard's fingerprints got on the gun (even the trigger) during his fight with Sykes. Not only that but the gun went off, covering both in gunpowder residue.

However, there was at least one witness right in the same car that you can see ducking down during the struggle. If Richard had left the guns, people wouldn't have seen "A man with TWO guns" running from the scene which created the "conflicting reports" Biggs informed Sam about.

He wasnt going to shoot anyone and dropping them in the mailbox would be safer than just tossing them in the gutter or something where anyone could pick them up and use them.
