(spoiler alert) Why did Dr. Nichols want to shoot Gerard?

I imagine Dr. Nichols would want to take out Richard Kimble with that pistol. Or was he just mad enough at that point that either one would do?

He heard Gerard reveal he knew his and Sykes' crimes and that he would prove it. So he was going to kill him to keep from going to jail.

Dr. Nichols was already aware Gerard knew the whole story and for Nichols to avoid being Tried and sentenced, he had no choice but to try and kill Gerard.

Also, with Kimball now being Innocent, more information would Leak out and blow the Lid off on the whole Provasic deal and Nichols could not possibly allow that to happen. The Coverup would be exposed.

I think at this point it was more about Nichols being able to escape, as I'm sure Gerard's team knows the truth as well.
