Plot explanation: FBI and McDeere (and my 27 year old riddle)!

I love this movie and have watched it every few years since it's release. I have never found anyone who can explain this part of the plot. McDeere admits to the firm that he was approached by the FBI in case he was under their surveillance, a good move Mitch! What I don't understand is, how can he just make a joke that the FBI wanted "the secret file" and the whole meeting then turns to laughs and levity? Why wouldn't the members of the firm direct him to specifically answer the question? Please help end my 30 year riddle!

I'll give it a shot.

Peer group dynamics.

People naturally want to be part of a team or group or a "in" crowd.

Wasn't it Hackman's character who chimed in quickly "Where is that secret file anyway?...Marty do you have it?"

Hackman's character could be seen as protecting Mitch.

The vauge answer worked, but that doesn't mean the heads fully trusted Mitch, they just didn't feel comfortable pressing someone who is still considered to be on their team. Hackman's (Avery Tolar) quick thinking changed the tone from serious to levity.

Peer group dynamics makes everyone want to laugh.

This is a great movie. Got to rewatch it again.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Wasn't everybody laughing because they acted like there weren't any "secret files"?
