Avery (Gene Hackman's character) He screwed up one time, but had been loyal for so long. Doesn't make sense to kill him over one *beep* up.

A *beep* up that could endanger the firm. If these guys care about loyalty they wouldn't kill people who work for them.

Agreed. It was a fairly major screw-up and therefore there was no going back to Memphis for Avery and he knew it.

That's why Avery told Abby the truth about Mitch and the girl on the beach. Avery knew that he was going to be killed. He wanted Abby not to hate Mitch.

There's no 'truth'. There was a girl on the beach. Mitch had sex with her - he did it of his own free will. How she got there is immaterial.

On the other hand, if Avery suddenly ended up dead, it would probably spark even closer investigations by the feds into the other deaths at the firm.

They would probably be better calling him back to Memphis to try to wriggle out of the mess.
