That's what flashbacks are (people think past events are happening again in the present [they're not just experienced as {even very powerful} memories]).
Also it may be splitting hairs but I don't think he was in a real state of grace (unless the director was trying to communicate this message about spirituality); he was in a overwhelmingly numbed-condition.
