I know he alluded to the fact that she got older and lost her looks, but was that all that was wrong with her? Seems like she was borderline bipolar or something. Getting older typically doesn't cause people to act so irrational.

Add the belief in the myth of the police officer dying just before retirement and she could literally be worried he would never come home.
