it seems to me that almost all characters in this movie have a certain type of accent which i cant figure out...especially mr wilson, anyone else notice this, is this just an accent that walter matthau had?

I think Mrs. Wilson had a British accent, but I'm not sure about Mr. Wilson.

Mr. Wilson's accent was a Chicago accent. The whole story was filmed in a Chicago suburb.
And yes, Joan Plowright is indeed British.
