Why not be a little more civil to Benny Blanco?

I never got that. Sure Benny came across as a hothead at first, but once he saw he was talking to Carlito he became very respectful. Would it have killed him to give Benny the five minute talk he wanted? All he had to do was explain that he is clean now, and that he wishes Benny the best. Sure if Benny starts trying to push boundaries with him after that then yes stand up to him, but why not just maintain a small amount of civility?

Yeah I didn’t get Carlito’s sudden irrational hostility toward Benny, it made no sense to needlessly turn this hothead into an enemy. Was it to do with Benny screwing the girl who worked at Carlito’s club? Or are we supposed to believe that Carlito momentarily flipped back to his old self?

It was an obvious tactical blunder that seemed out of character for the otherwise peaceful and strategic Carlito.

Obvious tactical blunder, yes.
But also, great writing.
Don't we all want to do every right choice at the right time?
He was dealing with many problems at once, he could not win them all.

His behaviour against BB was obviously a mistake.
We see that it will cost him enormously.
But he had no idea of that when he did it.
And psychologically it was an old reflex, showing his true nature.
Carlito tries to repress himself, and ironically, that is his second mistake.
And he knows this will cost him.

reply

because Carlitos was no better than the people of the scene he left behind, even if he thought he was

reply

Very true. He was still a thug, even if currently not doing thuggish things.

reply

because john lequisamo is just to annoying. his character annoying. little shit!!

Carlito saw his younger self in Benny Blanco and hated the thought of associating with that type again. Add to that Benny's claim on the girl and Carlito was just triggered beyond reproach.

reply

To add insult to injury, Carlito lets him live after Benny pretty much promised he would wack him. If Carlito had at least written him off passively then he would have been boarding his train to Miami with no problem

reply

he was civil with him at that first meeting, even wishing him well at the end. I guess the 2nd encounter, when Benny wanted Steffi to be sent over to him, offering champagne in exchange, Carlito let his pride get in the way. Conceding to this would feel like letting Benny take advantage - while he was happy to tolerate/be civil towards him, he drew the line at having to show respect towards him. He more or less said those words himself. "moves a couple of ounces, I've supposed to respect him?!" or something to that effect

I think Carlito subconsciously recognized that Benny was exactly the same type of person he was before prison, and didn't like accepting the idea that Benny was going up in the world while Carlito was going out. Probably recognized that he was a little shit himself back in the day, and would have deserved the same treatment and probably did get treated the same at one point, but more of it was light jealousy over the fact that Benny was taking over what was once his, while he was going to rent cars.
