"No -- You Stay Here" (MAJOR SPOILER)
The ending of Carlito's Way is very sad...even if we get shown it right at the beginning of the movie: Carlito gets shot (will he maybe survive the wounds? is maybe the only sliver of hope offered for the whole movie.)
Funny how exciting, suspenseful and downright scary the scene is with the Mafia guys chasing Carlito onto the subway and all around Grand Central Station. Its so exciting we pretty much forget he's gonna get shot.
Carlito manages to kill all the Mafia guys -- with the help of the cops with the last -- but he forgot about Benny Blanco from the Bronx. And so, maybe, did we(even if it seemed inevitable that Benny would turn up sometime to kill Carlito.)
So its sad when Carlito gets shot just as he reaches the door to the escape train, and in front of his pregnant lover, yet.
And with all this sadness -- and sad music playing on the soundtrack -- Carlito (and we) get the information that his supposedly loyal assistant Pachanga(Luis Guzman) , has sold Carlito out by telling Benny where to be , to kill him.
"Sorry but that's the way it gotta be's, sometimes," Says Pachanga to the dying Carlito , or something like that.
Then Pachanga turns to Benny from the Bronx and we get this exchange:
Pachanga: C'mon, let's go.
Benny: No -- you stay here.
And Benny shoots Pachanga, just like that, and he dies.
Its a great throwaway moment amidst the tragedy of Carlito's imminent death. Damn -- Patchanga sold Carlito out to Benny Blanco. Ha! Benny knows if Pachanga could do that to Carlito, Pachanga could do that to BENNY. So -- his work done, Pachanga is expendable and unreliable.
"No -- you stay here." Bang(well, actually a silenced "poof.")
One of the best laughs I've ever had ...during a sad scene. And Benny, in committing two back to back murders with cops not that far away...may just be the Next Carlito. He's fearless.
