Penn's arrogance

As much as I like Sean Penn, and I think he is one terrific actor, I also think he believes this himself and he sounds like a bit of a smug prick in person:

According to Brian De Palma, Sean Penn demanded 30 takes of the shot of Kleinfeld asking Carlito to help him with Tony T's escape. When De Palma wanted to move on to the next shot, Penn screamed at De Palma. He continued to yell at De Palma on the ride back to New York City. He later called De Palma on the phone to continue yelling at him. De Palma said that was the only argument they had on the film.
Unless this is something that has been taken out of context and Penn was just being pretentious by keeping in touch with his coke head character.

Penn is famously an arrogant douche, though I can identify with not being happy with a take and wanting to redo it over and over.

*shrug* actors and directors can be very passionate about what they are doing..to have one big argument on what can be a 3 month shooting schedule and a year long project seem to be to be a forgivable blip in terms of personality quirks.

Better to have a skilled passionate actor than one who calls it in and you get a mediocre performance on every scene.

That scene was the crucial pivot of the whole movie, but for all that it felt pretty underwhelming. Penn was probably right.
