Would a Body Snatchers Invasion in Real Life Be Possible?

I dont think so because there is no way most people could be cloned and replaced that easily with out someone else not knowing. Most people dont sleep alone in the same household. There would be 911 calls of husbands calling saying that their wife has crumbled into to dust, and stuff like that. The only way it would work is if people higher up in government like congress, police, etc got podded first.

reply

Your forgetting that the clone also has the memories of the original as well. Also its not just done one at a time, both would probably get replaced at the same time, and if theres a sufficient number of pod people, they'd be able to replace others more easily.

reply

Heck yes it's possible!!!

Evil aliens have been inhabiting Dick Cheney's body for decades.

The 1978 version would seem to be the least plausible invasion of them all. We learn right at the start that 'webs' have shrouded the Bay Area. These webs are seen to sort of melt in the rain and become the pods. The webs were mentioned in the newspaper, so clearly there was enough time for them to be noticed. So, no-one took a sample and investigated?

But as to whether an invasion would succeed depends on the first night, doesn't it. If the first load of duplicates can be created without causing alarm, then a beach-head has been formed and the invasion will probably succeed. On the first night who gets podded depends of course on random chance, but from Day 2 onwards intelligent minds are overseeing the spread of the pods and the short-term cover-up. By Night 3 or 4, there'd be enough duplicates around to largely dispense with the cover-up, as indeed we see during the City Hall pod distribution sequence towards the end.

The 78 version indicates that the initial duplications were singular and in out of the way places...there's a scene where we see a large pod being handed over to Creepy Balding Guy by a black chap who emerges from under some sort of bridge or derelict building. Said black guy's attire would suggest (but not confirm) that his original was a member of a street gang. Possibly, this gang dwells in the rundown place mentioned. Apart from people who stupidly took a pod home (eg Elizabeth), the first dupes who emerged on the first day the aliens were active would have been hobos, street people, gang members and that sort of underclass. No-one takes any notice of them at the best of times, and that's presumably how most of the initial duplications were able to pass undetected. But it seems INCREDIBLY unlikely that nobody witnessed a pod duplication and raised the alarm. Remember that scene near the start where the bearded guy is running for his life across the road, looking fearfully at the sky, and then we hear the first of the pod shrieks? Even at the start, there are witnesses, and the relatively small number of duplicates don't seem to care if people hear and see them making creepy noises in broad daylight in busy areas. Why did NONE of these witnesses succeed in alerting someone in authority?

The manner of duplication is inconsistent too...the 93 version requires lengthy contact between host body and pod via the "noodles". The 56 version suggests that a pod merely needs to be close to the host, the copying being remote. Mind you, said version also suggests that the pod *takes over* the host, rather than copying it per se. That's the only way to explain the scene at the end when Becky is left in the mine, and wakes up as a pod when Bennell returns to her. Presumably her duplicate body is everything that was human about her, and in all cases the things that come out of the pods and form into humans are inert and dead. Odd way to copy, isn't it? An exchange of matter, one to one, rather than a straight conversion of pod matter into human material. The 78 version tries to have it both ways....tendril contact would seem to be essential (Matthew and Jack are both 'tendrilled'), yet the first time Elizabeth is copied she is nowhere near her pod/duplicate body. And the second time, we don't even see the pod her successful copy springs from. The transfer is so swift that it seems to be undeniable that all a person need do is go near an active pod, and said pod then begins the copying process. Elizabeth is asleep at the end for at most two minutes, which again suggests that the copying began well before she lost consciousness. So...why the need for the tendrils? Confusing, innit?

I don't think the body replacement idea was ever supposed to be a "realistic" form of invasion. I think the idea was supposed to have represented the fear, real or not, of a silent "invasion" by communists in the 1950s, as members of society became "replaced" by Soviet agents and collaborators.

If you think about it, if an alien civilization had superior enough technology to travel all the way to Earth from a distant planetary system or galaxy, they could probably wipe us out in a more direct manner. "Independence Day" would probably be more realistic. Show up and destroy.

reply

But they dont want to wipe us out. They want to assimilate us in. Like the Borg.

No. There is proof they are not aliens. Beings that can traverse the distance of star systems and infiltrate another race without being noticed cant be THAT stupid.

@derekj: Hilarious and spot on.

What's this week's obsession? Provided that it doesn't involve green ears or ra*e? Who cares?

reply

No,I'd say that it's already happening because of the Democrats have been replaced with the Communist Party USA pods and all the nimrods who still support Obama are also pod-people and proof of the invasion.

reply

actually the book was about people becoming more materialistic (as in more interested in money, possessions, etc). The main character echoes this sentiment in the first film, but reviewers later saw the movie in its entirety as representing a "Red Scare" propaganda theme.

Yes..... Very true! Bravo!.... Bravo!

reply

Yes this is an interesting question
Similar the zombie one, or Reign of fire
We should work out they are here before they outnumber us, but would we win?, normally with superior forces yes, but their camouflage is a powerful weapon.
They dont seem to follow the 2 to the power of 2 rule so dont exponetially take over. 2,4,8,16,32,64,128etc That would seem essential,Theirs was more a one to one so slower, Yet they did seem to be doing it at a fast rate
The fact they could stroll into every other army base full of hairy pods, would seem illogical as well.
In this case one snatch went wrong, a screamer sends the all snatchers out, blowing their cover, though they seemed to have the numbers. This should not be the case in every base,
Our heros could spot them in a few minutes (mostly)so they cant infiltrate permanently
Not to mention recipients waking up mid change, there should be enough 911 calls to flag it higher, not to mention all that gunfire (even in America)
A few towns, streets, houses holding out could tell the world with the internet; facebook and twitter would light up like christmas tree
Clearly the way they melted meant they were not perfect copies and a DNA test or hopefull a vey quick emthod should find them out, stoping infiltration. Who knows, maybe a youtube of a cute puppy or cat would spot them or even a simple gun pointed at the head seemes to identify them
They should be able to work out ground zero and napalm that lake a day after they are identified, that would slow them down
Perhaps their best bet would be to get to some decent weapons stores, one nuke and wipe us out, but their biggest weakness is that they need us alive to copy, but we dont need them, it is in our best interest to wipe them out,no questions asked so merrily machine gunning slowly approaching pod people is a no brainer.
I use the same argument for all alien attacks. They manage to get here at faster than light, superior weapons, have kicked countless other races butts. We are not that special, they should roll us too, unless we can upload a virus to the mothership, nothing beats that!

Ofcourse its very possible just look at Sweden today. Sweden has its ruling people turned into aliens.

Another unrealistic thing about the San Francisco version was that DOGS are very popular in San Fran. So many people have pets there are more dogs than children there.

Well pets would be TOTALLY freaking out, even more than people, dogs would be going ballistic. Not one dog was shown freaking out in that movie.

i have been thinking about this lately. i have a close friend that is basically a completely different person than they were 2 months ago. even their appearance has changed a bit. i could just be hallucinating since im the only one that seems to notice
