Celery and peanut butter

I watched this film a few weeks ago, and when I watched the scene where Joon is eating celery with peanut butter, I thought the combination was supposed to be a disgusting and weird culinary invention of Joon, just like the milkshake with cereals and peanut butter, but just the other day I discovered that celery and peanut butter is a famous food combo, just like the grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup, the BLT, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the peanut butter and banana sandwich, popcorn with butter, baked beans on toast or strawberries and Nutella in the UK. Those are combinations of food that I didn't really know some time ago because they are not that popular in my country. Some of the ingredients of those foods are not even available here. Of course I know about peanut butter, but you can not purchase it at your neighbourhood grocery store here, you have to go to a big shopping centre to find it. But others of those combinations just are not popular here, like strawberries and Nutella. You can have Nutella everywhere, but I don't think it has ever ocurred to anyone here to combine it with strawberries The other day I was talking to somebody about this combination and they looked at me as if I were crazy. I'm just imagining how they would look at me if I talked about celery and peanut butter...

It was so funny that just a few days after watching the film, I was reading a blog about food and there was this woman who made herself a snack that is called 'Bumps on a log' and she described how she made it. Then I googled it and found that celery and peanut butter is a quite popular combination. And then I had a moment of realization until it hit me. I was like: 'Wait... Isn't celery with peanut butter what Joon was eating in the film?' And there was I thinking that it was just an outrageous food behaviour from her

How in the world did that combination come about?

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

lol... I had this almost every day for lunch while I was growing up.

Yet thinking about it objectively... celery being in the onion family... it is quite odd.

I would think it was weird to put chocolate sauce on a mushroom... but is it really so different from celery and peanut butter?

reply

I never thought peanut butter and celery was odd. I've eaten it all my life.

Now peanut butter and jelly? Yuck.

reply

I thought it was weird when they served it in preschool and onto grade school as snacks. I never really liked it

Celery is not in the onion family, onions are in the Amaryllidaceae family and celery is in the Apiaceae family.

When I was little, we used to have "ants on a log." You fill the celery with peanut butter and put raisins down it in a line.

^_^

reply

Yeah, but it's a shame about the raisins. They're just humiliated grapes. ;-)

One of my favorite lunches is carrots with peanut butter. Don't knock it before you try it.

I've had carrots with peanut butter, too. I love it.

Either one - carrots or celery make find combo. Also nice is juicer bag of carrots. Mix the carrot juice 4 parts to 1 orange juice. Tastes like an orange creamcicle. Yum & healthy.
Don't get me started on black garlic. Great w/ Gulf Shrimp pasta for a deep flavor kick that's different. Aged a month in heat & humidity the stuff is mainly at gourmet and Asian stores. Not the same health buzz as lemon oil and garlic but does wow to fish, pork, lamb, things that can take the molasses flavor.

When I was in middle school and high school, my school sometimes served honey peanut butter with celery sticks.

When joon makes her cereal(Captain Crunch) and peanut better milkshakes didn't look delicious . I hope Johnny had to do that scene only once. lol

Peanut butter and celery is mighty good, I feel for it every now and then. Whenever I buy celery.

Celery and peanut butter was my favorite snack growing up (and I'm in my 30's). I never thought about making a cereal smoothie, but I think its a great idea, especially if you're running late for school, work, etc.
