The advent of his character was unneeded - took the film in a whole different direction. I think i would of enjoyed the film more if him and the character Sam wasn't in it at all. Not that i disliked him, just it felt like a gimmick. Aiden Quinn was much more interesting to me as a character, wanted more on him rather than him reacting to Sam for the rest of the movie.
sharei suppose i agree the film would have been better if there was a little more focus on just benny and joon, but i dont know if id enjoy it more. i loved how sam being there helped benny and joon grow/let go, like how it helped benny let joon have her own appartment etc. i thought sams character was key, yet i do think that they perhaps could have shown a little more on benny, wen i think about it. but to be honest, i didnt think it at the time and really enjoy it as it is.
shareI feel like if Sam hadn't shown up, Joon would have just gone to the group home and Benny would have felt guilty about it and continue to let his life pass him by. I wouldn't have liked that direction. Sam was the catalyst that eventually led to the happy ending.

Depp is what makes this movie so great! Sam needed to enter Joon's life, Sam is the reason Joon became happy.

Without Sam, John goes to a group home and Benny just drifts with the current. The introduction of Sam is what got Joon to go to the diner and is how a love interest for Benny got introduced. Also, with Joon becoming less of a burden on Benny because Sam is there, he is able to take time and develop a relationship.
Your version of the movie would be over in 20 minutes.
NO it would have been a much different film, not "Benny and Joon."
sharecouldn't disagree more, this movie would have been NOTHING without depp. he gave it soul and all what makes it so great.
btw i think the title of this thread should have been "without Sam" not without Depp.
