Optimal placement of 'Mask of the Phantasm' in the B:TAS chronology?
I am in the process of rewatching the entire DCAU starting with "Batman: The Animated Series" (B:TAS). When it comes to placing "Mask of the Phantasm" (MotP) in the B:TAS chronology, one thing is for sure. "Mask of the Phantasm" definitely follows "The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy", which introduced the Bat-Signal. After that it's a bit fuzzy.
I ended up rewatching MotP between Volumes Two and Three of the DVDs. That's after "Harley and Ivy" (Production Number 56) and before "Shadow of the Bat" (Production Number: 57-58).
After reviewing the movie, I found two sources (http://www.tor.com/features/series/batman-the-animated-series-rewatch and http://dcanimated.wikia.com/wiki/Joker/Chronological_appearances) which place "Mask of the Phantasm" after "The Worry Men" (Production Number: 65).
However, I believe that my slightly earlier placement after "Harley and Ivy" is better for the following reasons:
1.) Batman tells Andrea in MotP that he can read lips. In "Shadow of the Bat" we see him doing exactly that.
2.) It makes sense that Batgirl doesn't get involved in MotP if it takes place before "Shadow of the Bat"
3.) If Bruce just had his heart broken a second time by Andrea, his quick rejection ("Forget it") of Talia in "The Demon's Quest" makes more sense.
4.) There is a six episode gap between "Harley and Ivy" and the Joker's next appearance in "Fire From Olympus". That provides ample time for him to turn up and get recaptured.
5.) The fact that the Joker only has a cameo in "Fire From Olympus" serves as a nice little acknowledgement that the character survived the events of MotP.
So I think placing "Mask of the Phantasm" after "Harley and Ivy" is pretty close to optimal. Do you agree? And if not, what do you think is the optimal placement of this movie in the B:TAS chronology?
