The Beatles or Lennon Bio-pic?

When is someone going to seriously tell the story of the beatles or perhaps lennon in a bio-pic in the same league as Ray or Walk the Line, seems to me if pop music bio-pics are no longer being handled only by VH1, then big movie studios would be smart to invest in one of the greatest and saddest stories in music history

What does smartness have to do with the big movie studios? And looking over what the Beatle fans here and on Beatles BBSs are interested in discussing, I'd say it's liklier that we get a flick about how the Beatles were from outer space and created crop circles between concerts or a more serious film of how Pete Best was booted out due to John having the unrequited hots for him and Ringo, too, than a serious, accurate film about the Beatles. I'm afraid you'll have to make that one yourself, MRScotty.

I made a video about this :

I wasn't able to watch YouTube back then and, now that I can, "This video has been removed by the user." Bummer.

I would guess maybe Apple Corps (i.e. Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia) might authorize an "official" Beatles biopic to come out in 2013, which will be the 50th anniversary of Beatlemania (although it actually started in 1962).

On the other hand, none of them really "need" the money, and if such a film was even remotely accurate, it would portray certain people in a bad light for at least part of the storyline so who knows if any (or all) of them would want to be cooperative.

The Beatles were always ahead of everyone else. No, they sure don't need the money. No, I don't care if kids today get shown that the Beatles are great. It's simply for selfish reasons that I would like to see more of their old material and a good bio-pic tackling them. As this blizzard socks in our nation tonight, my thoughts naturally drift to the story of the Beatles.

Actually, what would be VERY cool would be a cable miniseries covering their entire career.

You could make an awesome 12-week miniseries pretty much following the Beatles year-by-year over their whole career.

Chapter One would cover everything up to 1962, and Chapter Twelve would cover everything after 1970.

In between, you could break up into episodes roughly corresponding to their studio albums.

It would be pretty tough to do, because you would have to go through a lengthy casting process to get four guys who have real strong facial resemblances for JPG&R, could fake playing the music, and ALSO get together musicians who could reproduce the songs adequately.

If it was fully authorized by Apple Corps, they could dub in all the studio outtakes, backing tapes, all that stuff -- but then it would be REALLY crucial that the actors all look AND SOUND almost exactly like the Beatles.

But again, to make it worth doing, all four of the principals would have to agree to allow themselves to be portrayed not-always-favorably, and who knows if any or all of them would agree to that.

EVERYBODY in the whole saga acted like a jerk at one point -- I'm not going to get into the whole Yoko argument, but she and John each had moments, including hard drug addictions, Paul indeed DID act like a prima-donna and like a total ass to George and Ringo at times, and George sometimes acted like a whiny baby.

As far as the women go, Yoko definitely has her pros and cons and the same could be said about Linda, Pattie Boyd and Cynthia. At some point all of them will be portrayed in less-than-angelic terms.

You could never do any kind of even remotely honest Beatles biopic without getting at least PERMISSION of the four principals, if not their active cooperation, because if you don't do that (as some of the cable-tv biopics have done), you can't use Beatles songs, which means your movie is pretty much over before it begins.

Obviously nothing is being done for 2013/2014 for the 50th anniversary of Beatlemania.

But I still suspect something might come out in 2017 for the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper.
