Wreckage

Does the wreckage still exist? I know the military burned the fuselage, but something must have been left over, no?

They never burned the tail section, right? So if you're some curiosity seeker, the tail is still there to be visited??

Anyone know anything?

reply

There are still many random pieces of the plane strewn about the crash site - sections of the wings and cabin, one of the propellers, and plenty of personal items. Avalanche activity in the area frequently displaces, conceals and reveals these remaining pieces.

As far as I know the tail was not burned, so it should still be there somewhere. I haven't seen any recent climbers comment on it, however. Perhaps it has been relocated by one of the aforementioned avalanches.

You mentioned climbers comment? Any idea where I can look those comments or even reports up?

The fuselage itself has fallen into a crevasse in the glacier and is no longer visible. Many of the parts of the plane are still visible and this year even more so as there is hardly any snow up there.

Ricardo Pena is the one who runs Alpine Expeditions and is the one who found Eduardo Strauch's jacket (with passport, etc still in the pocket) and he has returned it all to Eduardo, together they now run expeditions to the crash site/Memorial every February.

http://www.alpineexpeditions.net/ has some recollections of recent climbs. There are a few other stories on the net from people who've climbed to the crash site, I don't have urls for them but I'm sure you can find them through a search engine.

That's a damn good link. Thanks. Too bad I can't find a pic of the wreckage - like it looks today.

this is another site.

they go up there a lot, apparently, and some of the wreckage found, is added to the burial memorial they've made for those who died there.

And like someone else said, since the plane where they actually lived for a while, is in the Trail of Tears, a lot of avalanches have continually reburied things and it's a dangerous place to go in the winter. but there's a pic of when the Chilean husadoes(sp) went up to the site to burn the wreckage to stop people from visiting the dangerous place.

that's an excellent link, just reading through it brings back home the bravery of those 2 men.

Why would you want to visit it? So dangerous!!! But I do want to visit the magic bus from into the wild in alaska!!!

Why did they burn it?

reply

Because it still contained excrement and decomposing human remains (on the one hand) and in order to deter souvenir hunters (on the other).

The fuselage has since been swallowed by the glacier.

reply

Couldn't they have cleaned it then put it in a museum?
