Lack of beards

after 70 days they would all have big bushy beards. Even the dudes that couldn't grow beards would have long wirey peach fuzz.

reply

No, there's nothing strange with the fact some of them didn't have very much facial hair after more than 70 days. The amount of facial hair on a man's face varies from individual to individual, some men can't grow a full beard no matter how old they are, or no matter how long they don't shave.
Also some men don't develop an "adult" beard until somewhere in their 20s, and most of the guys were in their teens/early 20s.

reply

That's a stupid explanation.

reply

Just because it's true? Beard growth IS individual, not exact science.

reply

I feel like in some way you can chalk it up to malnutrition, and the hazardous weather conditions. At least that's what I figured.

Was it possible that some of the guys brought along some grooming kits? A tooth brush, a razor, etc.? Surely one of two of them brought along one...

reply

In the book, there is mention of a hurried clean-up session the survivors had on the morning of the helicopter rescue (they had heard over the radio that Canessa and Parrado had reached help); however, while most tried to do some tidying up and some trimmed hair and beards there was no mention -- that I recall -- of anyone shaving, even though some undoubtedly had shaving materials (if they had electric razors, those would have been useless). They lacked sufficient water for regular shaving over the 70-day period, and those with bushy beards would have been hard put to get them off with ordinary razors.

Several of the boys did not grow much of a beard during their ordeal -- Sabella for example. Beard growth is genetically determined, and some individuals didn't get much of that gene.

reply

There are pictures that exist of the guys sitting around the fuselage. As far as I could tell... all guys had full beards at the time of the photos. They were not big and bushy like they were in the Taliban or anything... so they must have trimmed them with scissors. You can probably find the pics online somewhere, or watch the excellent 2007 Documentary "Stranded".

reply

As Scarlet said, most of them were still only teenagers and wouldn't have bushy beards, even after 70 days. (I know that I couldn't grow one at that age.) Look at the pictures in the book. There's a photo of the guys on the day they were rescued...most of them did NOT have a lot of facial hair.

reply

Actually, they mostly did have bushy facial hair. The youngest among them was 19, the rest were 21 and above.

reply

If you look at the pics of when they were rescued, most had beards and looked about 40.

WE LOVE THIS MONKEY!!!

reply

There was a greater age range than that.

Carlitos Paez, the youngest, was 18 (he had a birthday during their time on the mountain). Zerbino and Canessa, the two medical students, were both 19. So were Antonio Vizentin and Alvaro Mangino. Bobby Francois and Roy Harley were 20. Pedro Algorta and Ramon Sabella were 21, as was Nando Parrado. Coche Inciarte and Pancho Delgado were 24, and the three Strauch cousins were 24, 25 and 26, with the old man, Javier Methol, aged 36.

So that made for 5 teenagers, 5 aged 20 and 21, 5 aged 24-26, and one aged 36.

They tried to film the movie in chronological order to allow for beard growth naturally. Some men actually do have very little facial hair. Some of the pictures in the book (of Sabella, for instance) do not show much beard growth. The picture of Carlitos embracing his father by the helicopter looks like Carlitos was almost clean-shaven.

reply

Actually, in the documentary for the 20th anniversary DVD, narrator Martin Sheen states that Nando was only 19 at the time.

reply

He does state that, but it was an error. Nando was born in December 1949, which meant he was 22 when the plane crashed and had his 23rd birthday while they were on the glacier. He might have simply mixed up Canessa and Parrado -- Canessa was 19.

reply

i couldn't get over the fact that ethan hawke had the same scruffy 5 o'clock shadow that he had in reality bites. give me a break.

reply

This is just from a personal experience. I'm a man, I live in Pennsylvania and shave every other day. I went on a fishing trip very far North into northern Canada with my Uncle and my Grandfather. We were there for 9 days and by the end of 9 days all 3 of us had nothing but a 5 o'clock shadow.

reply

They could also just have shaven...
No evidence in the book, but perfectly possible. They probably had some razors in their suitcases.

reply

but shaving would've made no sense. if anything, their facial hair would help protect them from the cold.

yeah, it's like others say, they were just a bunch of young people and some people grow em, some, much slower. if you look at their before and after pics, it is quite obvious that their hair grew out a lot.

reply

I'm looking at the book as I write this. Sabella, Harley, and Vizintin had no visible growth in the photos on the mountain with the rescuers. So it is possible to not have a big Rasputin type beard after 72 days.

I just couldn't get over Ethan Hawke's perfect goatee! Like an earlier post said, it just the same as in 'Reality Bites'. The other guys are all hairy and flakey, and here's Ethan with a perfect goatee and a cocoa tan. Boo.

What knockers!
Oh, thank you, doctor.

Perhaps they ate each other's beards until they realized they could not survive primarily on facial hair.

reply

Actually, they mostly did have bushy facial hair. The youngest among them was 19, the rest were 21 and above.

Actually the youngest was 17!! [Gosh it's my age... I could've been there dealing with this situation, that's freaky]

Native Americans don't grow a lot of facial hair. I assume most of these boys were at least partially of Native descent. My half brothers, who are 1/4 Mexican, only grow patchy beards even after a long time without shaving. This may account for their lack of bushy beards.

Maybe it is deja vu, it sounds like it.

reply

A far as I know none of the boys had Native American blood. The native population of Uruguay was almost wiped out soon after the Spanish first settled. As a result of this most Uruguayans are white (88%), whereas Mestizos only account for 8% of the population.

reply

In real life, Nando had quite the beard at the end of the ordeal, as did Canessa. However, others didn't as noted. What are you gonna do, some men are hairier than others. It takes all kinds, even among white people. I'm 37 and white and have been able to grow a reasonably thick beard for about 5 years. My younger brother could grow a full Grizzly Adams when he was 16.

Ethan Hawke just isn't a very hirsute guy, and the filmmakers didn't bother giving him a fake beard. I would have liked to see it, just for the sake of authenticity.

reply

Come on after all that time even the smoothest guy would have a beard.

The real pictures showed them with beards and they look weathered as anyone would who had been put throght that.

When you're dealing with this type of subject matter you need to be as realisitic as possible.

The German film "Das Boot" about a German WW2 submarine crew was very realistic. You can look at old photos and the film replicated that.

Of course the Germans are sticklers for detail...LOL.

If you want to be believable you need to be realistic.

reply

go to trivia, ethan hawke refused to grow his beard.

reply

When they were rescued, if I remember correctly, neither Moncho Sabella nor Carlitos Paez had much facial hair. I have a feeling that Tintin might have not had much of a beard either.

reply

Right? And Ethan Hawk refused, REFUSED to grow a beard.
Why?! You going on a date or something?! I would have fired him right then.
