One of the few films that actually should be remade by Hollywood.
That will never happen, sadly.I think the weakest aspect of this film is the script - the dialogue is very wooden and some lines come across as laughable which aren't meant to be. It seems to have been a result of following the actual wording in Piers Paul Read's book too exactly.
But, a condition of the book deal that Read made with the survivors was that any
movie deal required unanimous approval from the survivors. When this film was made, it turned out to be a very divisive experience for many of them and caused friction that took some years to heal. So there is
no chance they would ever again agree to a Hollywood film. They did, however, agree to participate in a documentary filmed by one of their own friends, director Gonzalo Arijon. It's a moving portrait of their lives, during and after the Andes experience. The English version is entitled
Stranded and has been shown on PBS but I found the DVD, with a number of extra features, to be well worth the price.
