Heh heh, I get your point. But reasons for his inclusion aside, his performance just sucked imo. In fact, all of the performances were off, e.g. the guy screaming at the lady the first night, etc. Maybe it was a director issue.

I think it was more a problem with the screenplay. A lot of the lines were stilted and phoney-sounding. The example of the guy (it was Carlitos) screaming at the dying woman, and then expressing remorse over her grave the following day, is a good example. It comes across as maudlin, forced, whatever. But in fact, the lines (and there were many other examples) are taken straight from Read's book.
It a lesson that hammers home the point that a good screenplay does not necessarily adapt the language of the book it's based on; a film is a visual medium and the dialogue needed to fit the spirit of the book but flow with the visual arc of the film. IMO the screenplay is the weakest link in this film, which in most respects I like very much. share
