shareIn was John Malkovich playing the role of an older Carlitos Paez.
shareHe IS John Malkovich, and after 13 years, I still don't know what the HELL he is doing there. If they wanted a narrator, they should have called one of the actual survivors.
shareI agree.
If they were going to tell the story through the eyes of 'Carlitos', then they should have had Carlitos telling it.

It would've been nice to have had the real Carlitos, I agree. John Malcovitch has a great voice though, and speaks fluent English. For an American movie, that really helps.
What knockers!
Oh, thank you, doctor.
In real life Carlitos has a nice voice and speaks fluent English.
shareI didn't know that! The only interviews I've seen with Carlitos have been in Spanish. Then there was no reason for Malcovitch to be the narrator. Maybe the survivors didn't want to be in front of the camras? I know Nando was involved behind the scenes. I don't know.

I don't know why they wouldn't like to be in front of the cameras, they've done it many times and the speak English very well, plus they don't strike me as shy. Perhaps they weren't offered the role.

Carlitos would have been perfect to play himself as the narrator. He looks much more like Bruce Ramsay than John Malkovich does anyway. Carlitos has a nice voice too, at least I think so. Like a gruff teddy bear.
shareI thought only 1 of the survivors spoke English. He was the narrator on that show Alive 20 years later I saw on HBO once. He said none of the others spoke any English.
shareFrom the following interviews we can tell that
1) Roberto Canessa speaks good English

2) Coche Inciarte can speak good English

Nando Parrado speaks excellent English
I am pretty certain that Carlitos Paez does as well. I am almost certain that it was he and Canessa who were interviewed on Australia TV during the promotion of the movie.
Most of the survivors went to Stella Maris college which was run by Irish priests. I assume that many of the classes were in English because of this.
EDITED TO ADD:
I have just looked at Carlitos Paez CV which is on his site. He lists that he did promote 'Alive' in Australia. Having seem one interview he did back then I can say, with confidence, that Carlitos pseaks good English.
I would seem that Alvaro Mangino also speaks English.
It seem that only last month he and Coche gave lectures at Linkoping University in Sweden and the lectures were in English.
According to Piers Paul Read, all 16 of the survivors spoke English reasonably well. The ones who went to the Christian Brothers school in Montevideo were educated in English.

so does Carlitos, he would have been perfect.

Welcome to Hollywood; where white actors can play minority roles, but rarely can the same be said in reverse. In fact, there are agencies in Hollywood that contract only "Latino" actors. There are a few Black only agencies, but it's more for Black actors that want to stay together for protection against what is seen as a corrupt White system; a valid assessment at many times. In the case of Hispanics, they are specifically contracted out as greasy, accented immigrants, or 2nd generation hood-rats, also with accents.
Anyway, I've hated John Malkovich, Frank Marshall (the director) and Valorie Massalas (the casting director) ever since I saw Malkovich as the narrator. The role should have gone to a survivor, or at the very least, a South American.
I get your point.
But weren't most of the rugby team the sons of European immigrants? And 90% of the Uruguayan population is of European descent.
Whilst some of the survivors looked white, others didn't and Carlitos Paez was one who didn't.
He's not the son of a European immigrant, his father was born in Uruguay. If he is the ancestor of European immigrants, I'm guessing they're Spanish as one of his photos reminds me a bit of Antonia Banderas who's from Spain.
Absolutely. Maybe they were trying to attract a bigger audience using a main stream Hollywood actor.
shareit was john malkovich playing carlitos

The narration was totally out of place, and I dreaded to see John Malkovich pop up again at the end (which I knew he would).
