The Devil's Backbone

Has anybody been able to locate the Devil's Backbone or at least some of the individual locations where the scene was filmed?

reply

i hear it doesn't exist.

From what I hear, it was shot coming down off of Devou Park in Covington, KY. The "real" Devil's Backbone is a road out in Anderson Ferry (West side of town) and it is a flat road...no hills at all.

reply

You're right. In one of the Backbone scenes, you'll see a sign for KY Route 8. I love the path Devil's backbone takes in the movie. It does start on the westside (of Cinti) then somehow goes across the river to KY, and then back across to OH to the stairs leading down from Mt. Adams to Broadway Commons area. Good times.

It was shot all over the place. Some parts in Dayton, Bellevue, and Covington Kentucky and in Cincinnati. It's been a while sense I've seen the movie but I remember sections of my city being blocked off to film that scene. When the one guy falls through the wall coming down one of the hills... I know where that house is. It's close to my home. A couple of the bridge shots were also close by to my house.

LOL i live right off of devils backbone.. its not scary its just has alot of turns.. the real movie starts on devils backbone (idk loong time sence i have seen the movie) but the real road takes you down by the river.... and the central high thin is fake too... its really west high..kinda junky tech. school now

reply

haha kinda junky tech school?!!... Excuse me but I just transferred to west high from seton high school... Its not just a tech school. We have three different parts and I am currently taking college level classes, so quit hating on West High please.

The hill where they start the backbone is in Western Hills. You go past all of the old factories and the train tracks on the west side, directly west of downtown.(I think its called River Road) You can go left to go to Wilder, KY or go right to continue on into Western Hills.
Where is the resturant where Mcddermott and Seth Green go to with those girls? I know its on the levee somewhere?

reply

some of it was shot in clifton going down ravine street towards central parkway.

reply

the restaurant wasn't on the levee. it's in bellevue. A friend of mine was actually an extra in that scene when it was shot. As for the devils backbone, like others have said it starts in ohio, shoots across to route 8 near ludlow/covington (and the cincinnati intl airport, also in kentucky), then shoots back to cincy, finishing off at the river.

reply

The opening hill is the hill by the old powder factory in Kings Mills. I used to have to run it all the time for football.

reply

Actually, the opening is a hill on Springdale Rd. in Colerain Twp. You can see the I-74 and I-275 connection in the background. It jumps all around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. And yes, part of it was coming down Ravine St. onto Central Parkway. Some other parts looked a lot like places in Price Hill going toward downtown but I'm not sure.

I don't think any of it was on the real Devil's Backbone. There are actually two parts of Devil's Backbone that do not connect. One is in Western Hills/Bridgetown area between Muddy Creek and Werk Road. The other part is in Green Twp. and Delhi Twp. Devil's Backbone does not go all the way down by the river; it ends just a little bit into Delhi when it dead ends into Rapid Run. It does have some hills and turns, but nothing compared to some other streets. I grew up on a road off of Devil's Backbone right past the Delhi Twp. borderline.

Also I love how the one guy falls into the river since that would have been impossible from the old Riverfront Stadium. He would have fallen into a bunch of dirt haha. Oh and it's so weird to see Newport in the background having nothing but trees and a few buildings... since it's so built up now since the Levee was built.

I didn't really like the movie that much but I love watching for places that look familiar. I thought the school looked a lot like West High. I don't know where someone thought it was a tech school... it's a regular Cincy public high school. I remember when the film was shot and they were looking for extras. Everyone at my school was so excited.

Does it annoy anyone else from Cincinnati that most people not from here have no idea how to spell it correctly? It's so funny.

reply

I thought it all took place down on Gest Street off of Mehring Way and the streets around UC on Hopple, etc

reply

devils backbone is a street on the west side of cincinnati. and is not the st in the film. it was filmed on different streets thought the area. the road intersects with cleves-warsaw if anybody wants to look it up on the map

I'm from Kentucky, and I had never known that the Devil's Backbone was in KY. Small world, I guess.

reply

the devils backbone is a series or roads by the cincinnati international airport (which is actually in KY where most of the movie was actually shot). Its not one continuous curvy street as they lead you to believe, nor does it go to downtown cincinnati. But, it is an entire neighborhood of streets. I used to drive past one of the houses on it all the time (the one with the porch one of the guys flys up onto)

the restaurant is a few blocks from the levee, Pompilio's, and it is the most amazing italian restaurant in the world. By far the best place to go in cinci.
Rain Man was filmed there as well, the tooth pick scene. They have the toothpicks there still, and a big Airborne sign, signed by the cast.
