Was one else confused at a young age when Amanda’s Mother said…

“We just got her a whole new wardrobe.”

I’m from across the pond. Imagine me at a young age, watching this movie for the first time. In my country, a Wardrobe is a piece of furniture that you put in your bedroom. It has two doors to open and close. You hang your clothes up inside of it.

So little me was confused to why Amanda would be excited about a piece of furniture. Then sheltered teenage me tries to make sense of what she’s saying. And the best thing that I could come up with was that Amanda played with dolls and had an old fashioned doll house, she got a “whole new wardrobe” to update the furniture in the bedroom. My thinking was the wardrobe was the last piece in the new collection of furniture.

It wasn’t until I was an adult and regularly using the internet that I found out what it meant. “Whole New Wardrobe” = whole new collection of clothes.

So what IS the Brit term for "personal collection of clothes"?

It can't be "trousseau", that's specific to brides.
