Anyone else dislike the main plot line, super serious episodes?

First time viewer here, up to around season 7. Im finding the super serious episodes with the big conspiracies, like smoking man, scullys disease, mulders sister, the two parters, skinner, to be the absolute worst. Theyre so high strung and serious and its kinda grating.

I really just like when scully and mulder are on some interesting case or even the comedic episodes have been a joy to watch. But yeah ive been struggling with the super serious, main plot line ones,

Any one feel the same?

I don't feel the same at all and I would venture to say that the X-Files isn't really a fit for you because it can be argued that the mythology is the core heart & soul of the show.

Having said that, there are quite a lot of the light hearted stand alone episodes that I enjoy like Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, Jose Chung's From Outer Space and Humbug.

If it wasnt for me I wouldnt watched have kept watching for 7 seasons. There is plenty from the show to enjoy aside from the episodes mentioned.

Please don't put too much stock into what panzer is saying. There are quite a lot of us who prefer the MOTWs.

Telling somebody the show isn't for them isn't expressing an opinion. It's being a douchebag.

I have been a big fan of the show since it first began. I did enjoy the earlier mytharc episodes however they became so convoluted by season 6-7 that I found it an effort watching them. Some fans prefer the mytharc and others like the stand alones. I don't think a preference towards the stand alones questions them as fans of the show.

Straight out telling somebody who doesn't like the myth that the show isn't for them? What the hell, dude. A lot of people aren't big on the myth but still love the show.

I've gone through phases, and that was one of my phases! So yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. After 7 seasons, things got top heavy, and the fun eps kept me going at that time. If you haven't watched Fight Club, check it out. Some say it's awful. I say it's great! Either way, it's funny-intentionally or unintentionally.

I'm one of the fortunate viewers that enjoy both the conspiracy and the MOTW episodes equally.

In fact, I'd say that the existence of the serious, long-running, and complicated conspiracy episodes makes the stand-alones more enjoyable, knowing that M&S can fluctuate wildly between the kinds of cases they take and the tone of the narrative. The comedic, inverted universe of "Jose Chung"only works because of the existence of the long-running conspiracy and how M&S interact in that setting.

I liked the conspiracy stories a lot in the beginning, and I also liked the monster-of-the-week eps. Around season 4, though, I started liking the conspiracy arc less and less. By season 6 I pretty much lost interest in it completely. For me the standalone episodes were really what made the show.

Yeah I'm with you there. Im not sure if I began to like them less because I just got tired of them or if they actually got worse (i think its a bit of both, thogh mostly the former).

Anyway its interesting - in a good way - to see from the comments that the community is rather divided on the different style episodes from the show, I guess its not surprising really, they are quite different styles.

I like both, but prefer the MOTW episodes. When I'm in the mood for the myth story, I will completely skip the MOTW episodes. It makes the story so much easier to follow.

I can see where you're coming from. Since the series ended, I have found myself going back to re-watch the series multiple times for my personal enjoyment. But I have to admit while I enjoyed the mythology episodes during the initial airing, I have found myself more drawn to the monster of the week episodes. They are very enjoyable and fun to watch. I think there is a lot of character development when it comes to the mythology, but it can be draining to watch. I remember during the initial airing, sometimes it was hard to follow the mythology.

I prefer the serious episodes all the way through season4. After season 4, I prefer the comedic or monster episodes.

Everything about X-Files season 1-9 was awesome minus a few scrap *beep* episodes.

The main plot + MOTW are both equally good in my opinion.

A bright light can hollow the deepest of nothingness.

Yes, the mythology was awesome. For instance seeing Mulder and Krycek going toe to toe- terrific. To see their characters developing was cool.

Yet who can forget Eve or Eugene Tooms (squeeze). Some of the classic 'MOTW' characters as well. Who left such a chill despite the writers only having 45 minutes to tell their story. Awesome indeed.

I couldn't agree more, I loved their interactions. Krycek might actually be my all-time favorite tv show character.

The Krycek storyline was actually when I started to get turned off. Such a bore.
