Racism and sexism in the original show: real or imagined?

Some people have suggested that this show was racist because the first black ranger was African-American, the first yellow ranger was Asian and the first red ranger had Native blood. I'm sure there are also people who claim that both the original show and succeeding seasons of Power Rangers were sexist, not only because the leader and red ranger is usually a male, but also because virtually every pink ranger is a woman and has a skirt on her uniform. Do you think this alleged bigotry on the part of Saban is real, or do you think it is overblown by the PC police?

The racism is imagined. Walter Jones (Zack) was actually asked if he wanted to be the Blue or Black ranger, and he chose black.

The sexism is not imagined however, but a lot of that is to do with the sentai.

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

This is why you Don't use IMDB and TV tropes as your sources
I didn't. It's just something I thought was common knowledge. Ah well.

The first yellow ranger was initially non Asian, so that's BS. And even if its true, how is it racist, except in the post 1984 world of new speak we live in? Racism involves a feeling of superiority. Power Rangers they were all equal. And the first Red Ranger was Jason, when was he ever revealed to be Native American? That was Tommy and he was the 3rd Red Ranger.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

Key and Peele do a perfect spoof of the racism (or perceived racism) on the show:

Unfortunately, there was a lot of homophobia backstage concerning David Yost who played Billy.
