Were Tommy and Kimberly ever in love?

I'm curious: I know Tommy and Kimberly were an item.I wonder if they were in love? Did they ever say the loved each other. I watched "Green with Evil," pt.1, today, and it seemed to be love at first sight. πŸ˜˜πŸ’ I know they couldn't show much of anything, because of censors, but makes you wonder, what was supposed to have been going on, that we weren't allowed to see!  I never saw "Power Rangers, Zeo," But seems like he was really upset when she sent him a "dear John," letter.  Were they ever aloe together a lot, without the other rangers? I just vaguely remember them appearing to be a couple.

reply

I don't think so - I've always looked at it as a high school romance. It never lasts - they grew up and moved on from each other.

And it wasn't love at first sight, it Kim saying 'wow, you look hot'. That's not love.

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

reply

For a kids show, I believe they were. There are a good amount of episodes that touch on their relationship a little. The Song of Guitardo, Green No More, White Light, Two for One, Best Man for the Job, Changing of the Zords are just off the top of my head. I didn't watch Zeo either. But I saw some of A Turbo movie (man that's a boring movie to sit through) and even though Tommy was with Kat in it. I'm completely convinced that Tommy was still in love with her. The look on his face when he saw that Kim and Jason had been captured. The freakout he had in the water. He even took off his helmet for Kim when she was under an evil spell.

reply

Why did she break up with him?

reply

Well after the actress Amy Jo Johnson left the show I guess the writers felt like Tommy just couldn't possibly be alone so they had the character Kim (they couldn't let Tommy be the bad guy) dump him in the coldest out of character way possible.

reply

Interesting. What reason was given though?

reply

Basically, Kim sent Tommy a letter saying she met someone elseβ€” the person she's meant to be with. And it would be perfect if she wasn't hurting him. There was also something about caring about him and that in some ways he's like a brother. I don't know who wrote that mess.

reply

Interesting. What about in Turbo? So, they were split up, but she wasn't with the other guy? This is kind of why, I would like to see a Power Rangers Reunion, maybe they could get back together.

reply

In A Turbo movie, there was no mention of the letter or the guy that Kim supposedly left Tommy for. I've seen internet rumors where certain fans like to claim that the guy was Jason and that a romance was set up for them in an earlier script but I never bought it nor have any of the actors ever confirmed that.

reply

I agree. If she mentioned meeting him, then it wasn't him, since she already knew him. I wonder if Kat was ever jealous of Kimberly? I just vaguely remember Tommy and Kimberly appearing to be a couple. I remember someone mentioning that they were supposed to have been knocking boots, LOL, 😁😁, I wonder what WAS supposed to have been going on, that we weren't allowed to see, because it being a kid's show and censors! πŸ˜‰Would kind of like to think Kimberly was redeemed a bit after Turbo, BTW.

reply

Kat was definitely jealous of Kim when she first came on the show. Granted, she was under an evil spell. Honestly, I'll never understand what was the point of Kat/Tommy because he was a terrible boyfriend to her. In the Turbo show, the focus was less on him. He was racing cars a lot. But I find it very telling that he'd watch Kim practice gymnastics but couldn't be bothered to show up for Kat's ballet recital. Oh, I would love a 'Where Are They Now' with the MMPR characters especially since JDF & AJJ have been recently taking pictures at cons together. Anyway, there's plenty of fanfiction (a huge amount actually) if you want a realistic teen approach to their relationship. They are so many letter fics.

reply

I heard that! So cool! 😎 He could have card for Kat, but she could have been more of a rebound. I think I vaguely remember seeing her as well. Was she English? I seem to remember her having an accent.

reply

Yeah, it does seem like Kat was the rebound. Tommy was more upset about Kim going to the Pan Globes than he was about Kat getting into a ballet school in London. Kat's Australian.

reply

Thanks! I thought she was English or Australian. Obviously, they would never say it, on a kid's show, but I wonder if Tommy and Kimberly ever "knocked boots," as someone said,ξ€Š or if Tommy and Kat ever did? Sorry I have a dirty mind, LOL!!!

reply

I say no because they were portrayed as wholesome teenagers. But people have their own opinions. That's why there is such a thing as fanfiction.

reply

True, it's interesting to wonder though! πŸ˜„

reply

I wonder if Kat was jealous of Kimberly in Turbo? Also, even though they may have not become an item again, did Tommy and Kimberly seem to patch things up in a way? Think Tommy would have gone back to her, if she had wanted to?

reply

I just think it would be cool for there to be a reunion, where Tommy and Kimberly got back together. Though they wouldn't all be there(RIP Trini). 😒😭

reply

Getting back together would be silly. It was a high school romance, nothing more - their characters would have grown up now and fallen in love with someone else.

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

reply

I disagree. There are people who do reconnect with their first love or high school sweet heart. You can love other people but there will also be that one that has a part of you none of the others will ever touch. That's why that breakup will leave a lasting impression on you.

reply

Of course, but nothing with Tommy/Kim ever suggested that they were the love of each other's lives. Tommy was upset when she broke up, but he seemed to get over it pretty quickly.

reply

That's because they weren't going to drag it out. They had rangers stuff that was more important. Saban had made it clear that he didn't care about the characters or storylines. That's why he replaced the 3 originals. Aisha wants to leave, we'll get another black girl in her place. Tommy's girlfriend broke up with him, we'll just put him with the new pink ranger since she wanted him anyway.

Despite the heartbroken aftermath Tommy deals with in Zeo, he shows great worry and effection for her in the Turbo film. Kimberly makes no reference to the boyfriend she left him for during that film, nor does anyone in general, having reunited with Jason on the way back to Angel Grove (whom did return in the second half of Zeo) eager to see the team again. She shows brief excitement toward Tommy before and after her evil turn, riding the Turbo zord with everyone back home and attending the film's culminating martial arts competition. Kat showed no jealousy toward Kim during the Turbo film and in fact was one of the Rangers trying to strongly remind her they were friends.

There's no further reference to how Kim is doing in the first Turbo team's duration within the Turbo season's first 18 eps, though in the 10th anniversary "Forever Red" ep of Wild Force where all of the first ten Red Rangers appear (...not counting Rocky...), Jason does make a joking mention of their high school years when referencing how Tommy would "kiss on" her. Further in Dino Thunder where Tommy returns as a regular (not appearing to be seeing anyone), Kim is seen in the flashback 500th "Legacy of Power" ep, in addition to a picture frame Tommy keeps of the original team in a later ep. Beyond Dino Thunder, we are simply implied in S.P.D.'s "History" and Operation Overdrive's two-part "Once a Ranger" that Dr. Oliver is still teaching.

In the Super Megaforce climatic "Legendary Battle" finale Tommy returns one more time alongside the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, despite Kimberly and the others only appearing with their helmets on, it's the first time every member of each team is reunited/united on such a grand scale. It's pretty easy to determine which Ranger is which in the first five teams, though the Mighty Morphin Yellow Ranger's identity is a mystery, these are who all returned:

Mighty Morphin: The original Dino Power Coins (never actually destroyed)
Mighty Morphin Red: Jason (Returned to him by Rocky at some offscreen point during Zeo or the Turbo film's climax)
Mighty Morphin Pink: Kimberly (Never passed on to Kat, whom was the second Pink for only the destroyed Ninja Power Coin)
Mighty Morphin Black: Zack (Returned to him at some offscreen point following Operation Overdrive's two-part "Once a Ranger")
Mighty Morphin Blue: Billy
Mighty Morphin Yellow: Trini or Aisha (Aisha kept the original Dino Power Coin)
Mighty Morphin White/Green: Tommy (Only resuming the form of Green, though still keeps Saba)

The "Mighty Morphin" Aquition-Alien Rangers
Red Alien Ranger: Aurico
White Aquition Ranger: Delphine
Blue Aquitar Ranger: Cestro
Yellow Ranger: Tideus
Black Ranger: Corcus

The Zeo Rangers (Tommy is the only one we don't see resume his form of this team, though he already resorted to Zeo Ranger V - Red one more time in "Forever Red")
Zeo Ranger I - Pink: Kat
Zeo Ranger II - Yellow: Tanya
Zeo Ranger III - Blue: Rocky
Zeo Ranger IV - Green: Adam
Gold Zeo Ranger: Trey

The Turbo Rangers (Aside from Justin, this team is made of non-aged robot duplicates of the second team that were once explored in Turbo, though T.J. did show in "Forever Red" he was capable of again becoming Red Turbo thanks to Lightning Cruiser as Justin could Blue thanks to Storm Blaster)
Blue Turbo Ranger: Justin (Storm Blaster empowered)
Red Turbo Ranger: T.J.'s robot duplicate
Green Turbo Ranger: Carlos' robot duplicate
Pink Turbo Ranger: Cassie's robot dupicate
Yellow Turbo Ranger: Ashley's robot duplicate

The Space Rangers
Blue Space Ranger: T.J.
Pink Space Ranger: Cassie
Yellow Space Ranger: Ashley
Black Space Ranger: Carlos
Red Space Ranger: Andros
Silver Space Ranger: Zhane

That's on top of all of the following teams that returned, though the mantle of Pink Galaxy Ranger was resumed by the once-Astronema Karone, as opposed to Kendrix whom took on the power again in Lightspeed Rescue's two-part "Trakeena's Revenge". Anyway back on subject, "The Legendary Battle" is the last we see of Tommy and Kimberly, though they don't directly interact. If you choose to look at the Zeo Christmas episode as canon, which was a full-fledged episode and not just a special like the Alpha one, Tommy gets back together with Kat and they have a family together. Really Tommy could hook up with anyone, choose who you want, the writers chose Kat.

They were indeed in love. This is what pisses me off about writers who like to sabotage characters or relationships without thinking about the ramifications it'll cause among the fandom &/or storytelling. There was no reason they couldn't have still been together. They could have keep it where they continue to send letters and then in turbo after the power transfer, have Tommy go be with her in Florida. That was not hard to write.

Kim saw Jason as a brother. She did not see Tommy that way nor would she had written that. Just remember when she first saw Tommy, she wanted to eat him up. (Can't say I blame her)

JDF & Amy had great romantic chemistry together where as JDF & Catherine did not and it showed. Tommy & Kat were better off as friends.

I remember reading that they were trying to have kim end up with Bulk. Then I read that they wanted Kim to come pick up Tommy after the end of Forever Red episode to show they had got back together (not sure how true this is). Then there was they wanted Kat to come back for Dino Thunder as Tommy's wife. It's said in A Season to Remember where Tommy ends up with Kat is an alternative universe and that he's actually single.

Interesting. That's one of the reason's I would like to see a Power Ranger reunion. It would be interesting to see them back together. I heard in a movie, Jason and Kimberly were kidnapped, and even though he was with Kat, he seemed to still love Kimberly. There was also no mention of the guy Kimberly was with after Tommy. Even though of course, they couldn't say it on the show, I wonder if "other stuff," could have been going on, that they weren't allowed to show...If you know what I mean? πŸ˜‰ Also, in that one movie, if Kimberly had said she wanted to be back with Tommy, if he would have left Kat, and gone back to her?

reply

I just saw I wrote Bulk. It was skull not bulk.

That's why that whole letter thing makes no sense. This was the first time they had seen each other since she had sent it. It was a huge thing and they don't even acknowledge it. The look on Tommy's face when he sees her says everything.
Would he have gone back to her, I don't know. This is the problem though when you become the "rebound" cause there is always a chance they could get back with their ex. That's why I rather they had him be single and have him and Kat be friends.

True. Kimberly coming back at the end of "Forever Red," sounded interesting. Wonder why they didn't go that route? Obviously they weren't allowed to show more then some kissing because of censors, but I wonder if anything else was supposed, to have been going on, that wasn't allowed to be shown? πŸ˜€πŸ˜³πŸ˜

They were indeed in love.
Based on what evidence?

reply

Maybe I should have said in my opinion I believe they were in love. We really didn't see them spending a lot of time together until season 2 when he became a full time ranger. I haven't watched MMPR in a while so I can't give specific things. Sometimes it's the little things and not necessarily the words. Although I wish they had said them to each other. The problem is Amy left so we'll never know how far their relationship would have went but there was nothing brother & sisterly about them.

That "Forever Red," scenerio," sounds interesting. Wonder why the didn't go with that?

I'm not sure but I don't think they contacted Amy about it. She's open to return now but Saban doesn't use union actors. It would have been great under Disney's ownership cause they do.

Did you watch the show from the beginning or did you pick it up late?

I was deep into Tomberly & when Amy left it broke my heart. I was like what's going to happen to their relationship? It's funny cause with the original 3 left it didn't bother me that much, well other than Rocky. I liked Adam & Aisha.

I watched it years ago. I saw the trailer for the Power Rangers movie coming out in the new year, and it made me want to revisit it, I have volumes one and two of the first season, and am going to get the rest. I just vaguely remembering appearing to have been a couple. It's fun though, watching it as an adult now, and seeing it from a different perspective. πŸ˜‰

reply

I know, I've revisiting a lot of old stuff now. Especially with the OG's doing Comic con panels and spilling tea. I've been looking at the show in a different way. I need to get the DVDs. I still got my VHS. I got a lil sis and me & my older brother have been introducing her to a lot of old stuff we use to watch.

I remember reading an interview a long time ago where the writer for the series, Amit Bhuamik, said that they were going to have Tommy and Kim be married in the "Forever Red" episode. According to Amit, the scene was going to have Kim picking Tommy up from the NASADA space port, confirming that she was his wife. They had a draft for it and everything, but unfortunately, Johnson was not available for filming, so the scene was cut from the episode, and instead they had Jason make his comment of how Tommy was "always kissing on Kimberly" to be a type of confirmation. Amit even posted this statement on his Facebook page for further confirmation, and has said that in his head-canon that they are married.

I suppose we're supposed to take from this that this husband/wife confirmation scene happened off screen. A lot of things actually happen off screen that are confirmed later by the writers, like Lokar's destruction in the final battle with Cyclopsis, or Rita given birth to her and Zedd's son, Thrax, at some point between the end of Zeo and the beginning of Space, or Dark Specter being confirmed to be of the same race as Maligore, or Prince Sprocket, Clank, Orbis, Goldar, Rito, Squat, Baboo, Finster, Scorpina, Master Vile, Porto, Rygog, General Havoc being reduced to dust in by Zordon's energy wave, or Jen choosing to remain in the past with Wes in their appearance in Wild Force, or the robot Rangers from Turbo being the Turbo Rangers on the "Legendary Rangers" episode of the Super Megaforce series, etc.

reply

Cool! 😘Thanks for the info! 😍 I saw people talking about Tommy and Kimberly as a couple, on JDF's FB page. I always remembered it seemed to be implied that Tommy and Kimberly were a couple on the show.

reply

They were certaiy an official couple once Tommy lost his Green power the first time around, heck we saw their first kiss right there, they just happened to be more a long-distance couple the two times he wasn't the Green Ranger anymore prior to "The White Light". When Tommy is the Green Ranger the second time around and later the White Ranger, the two date on a regular basis, they're comfortable enough to kiss in public by Christmas in Season 3, they are together. I think Tommy's time without powers in Seasons 1 and 2 was part of the reason he was so cool with Kim leaving in Season 3, he knew they could be loyal in a situation like that, notice Kimberly was the one with hesitations to leave.

To bad they couldn't do the scene. What was the "Forever Red," Episode about anyway?

All the red rangers (minus Rocky) teamed up to beat a rogue faction of the machine empire, which was digging up serpentera (lord zedd's zord) on the moon.

True love!πŸ’–

reply

I don't think so. They just seemed to both be attracted to one another so they just hung out a lot along with the rest of the group. Plus they really didn't have much time to date in between having to constantly spring into action during the day to take on the latest monster, putty patrol, etc.

So yeah. Well that and because it wasn't that type of show anyways. Now had this been a legit teenage drama with action mixed in such as Smallville or Buffy the Vampire Slayer we might have gotten to see relationships between rangers get more time put into it, but it didn't because the core audience for this show has always been little children.
