I believe it was a combination of things.
First, I believe Teri wanted to get out of the contract to go to bigger and better things!
Second, the writing became shoddy, probably because of number one.
Ratings went down because of number two.

Teri wanted out of her contract. Season 5 had already been green lit, but she didn't want to continue with the series. Rather than them recasting her they ended the show.

really doubt that was the reason... She was never THAT big of star.

Well they weren't going to cancel the show because she wanted out and she did have a cameo on Smallville so i guess she didn't totally hate her time as Lois Lane.
shareWhat bothers is the series was left without a proper finial.
If they didn't want to make a 5th series the least they could have done was produce a one off episode and make a proper finial.

shareI think 4 seasons was enough, so fair enough on the calculation and from what I read ratings were poor anyway.. (although I enjoyed it) But at least make a one off to finish it properly.
I HATE it when tv shows never get a proper ending, ok maybe if it gets canceled after one season it's kinda difficult but once you hit your 3rd it should deserve an ending.
