Lex Luthor
Why did they essentially kill off Lex luthor? Was it a money thing with John Shea?
shareNo, from what I have read John Shea did not want to keep traveling from NYC to LA to do the shooting.
shareI've never understood why I actors take these jobs if they can't commit to working in Hollywood. It's a shame in this instance as Shea was part of what made season 1 so great.
share
maybe he wasn't going to be in like every episode. be involved in the beginning but seen every once in a while.
I know he was the evil mastermind but there was also something about him that was likable.
OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

I agree. I think Shea was perfection as Lex season 1. I really loved the show, but season 1 is by far my favorite.
shareMichael Rosenbaum was way better in Smallville.

people say this and other things similar regarding this show versus smallville.
I can not get into smallville and that show just seems too convenient.
lex luthor did NOT GROW UP IN SMALLVILLE KANSAS!
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
For all this show's faults, I still maintain that Season 1 contains what is, thus far, the best live action interpretation of Lex Luthor.

Maybe relevant for today but Shea had the looks, physical presence, charisma and hint of menace to be luthor. Eisenberg engaging as he is will just be a twitchy dork. He'll be luthor in name only
You do understand Jesse played Lex Luthor JR and not SR right? John Shea is still my favorite Lex Luthor SR though.
shareI agree. Shea pulled the sneakiness of Lex off perfectly! yet, there was still something about him that made him 'nice' in a way. he liked Cat and Perry, worked with Clark when Lois was in touble/when he had to.
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
I don't think the show ever recovered from the loss of Lex's character after Season 1.
shareI hated how they got rid of him. The later seasons sucked with crappy villains.
But Lois and Clark barely added comic villains just cheesy criminals. Did DC restrict them.
The series would have done fine had they worked a deal for John to appear in at least five to six episodes spread throughout the season. Allowing him to continue to be a felt presence.
The show wanted to be an episodic action series and a rom com all at once. Thus they sorely lacked a season long villain or through line story arc post season one.
Season one felt complete at its finale when the world finally turns on Luthor. Because it had been built up over 22 episodes.
The following seasons had scattered bad guys and misadventures that never had the gravitas or presence of John's Lex.
Not even his guest spots could save the show as they wrote him as a one note Luthor for his re appearances.
