I agree completely, Turtleturk. Season one WAS magnificent. Besides what you mentioned--they cleaned the show up--in an attempt to homogenize it. They cut Hemingway's hair. They moved him from his seedy hole to a 'nice' apartment building. Not only did they give him a girlfriend--she was a nurse. They already HAD the perfect GF for a burn-out like him--Carly, the hooker, but, of course, the suits couldn't conceive of a hooker as a person w/whom to have a romance. After that, she was sidelined. They were trying to make it genially wacky, like Night Court. Before--the show was DARK! Chester(David Crosby) was brilliant casting. Him dying, but hanging around was a stroke of genius. John's AA meetings!
I loved the one where his old college chum (Lane Smith) showed up--as a fading drag queen. John won the lottery, but gave him the money.
I won't blame Alison Laplaca for the show jumping the shark. The producers deserve that credit.
This show SHOULD have been on HBO, where dark stuff is appreciated---Six Feet Under, for instance. They'd have treated it right.
