The Transexual Episode

First of all I've got to say I'm glad this episode took place after Dr Jack Stewart had left the show! I can only imagine the comedy end scene involving Jack being ribbed by Amanda and Steve with Mark quietly chuckling away as it fades to the credits. It would not stood the test of time for today's audiences...

Anyway, my question is what was episode angling at? What was it's implication?

I am talking here about the revelation that the transexual had been murdered by a former fiancé who had discovered they had changed. They were due to get married yet after a few weeks in boot camp the former marine disappeared and undertook a sex change! What was supposed to have happened in among all those soldiers which provoked such a radical transformation?
