Anybody else here a Charlie Schlatter/Jesse Travis fan?

I've already read on this MB that some posters prefer Scott Baio (or at least his character, Jack) to his successor, Charlie Schlatter (or at least his character, Jesse).

I have to say it took me a while to get used to both Charlie and Jesse, but after a while, I really became fond of Jesse, and some time after that, I began to admire the actor playing him.

Anybody else share these feelings?

Buzz: To Infinity…and Beyond! Woody: That wasn’t flying. That was… falling in style!

reply

he was okay, but i didn't like him as much as Jack. i generally prefer the first two series.

reply

Yes, Louise, you have already stated an opinion to that effect. I was asking if anyone else here felt as I do, in liking the character of Jesse Travis as portrayed by Charlie Schlatter.

If nobody else happens to agree with me, it won't be the first time in my life. 

Woody: Buzz! You're flying! Buzz: This isn't flying--this is...falling in style!

reply

I much preferred Jeese

ARSENAL PRIDE OF LONDON!!!

I have to say I prefer the Scott Baio/Jack seasons, also because I like the storylines and overall tone better. Or do you only want people to reply to this thread if they prefer Jesse?

LOL, Stratego, that's a fair question. As long as someone posts civilly--as you just did--it's perfectly fine for that someone to prefer Jack. Also, you cited your preference for the earlier seasons overall, which makes your choice of guys consistent and understandable.

The only reason I replied as I did to Louise Culmer--whose post was certainly civil enough--was that she had already stated her opinion re: Jack v. Jesse.

For the record, as far as looks go, I generally prefer dark guys--like Jack. However, personality-wise, I find Jesse a more engaging character, and usually more likable than Jack, who comes across as a weence too anti-hero for my tastes.

So far, I've seen only one poster (other than myself) who shares my feelings re: the two young doctors--and that's fine. I don't mind being in the minority, as long as no one insults me for my choice. 

reply

Good to know then!;)

Yeah, I get what you're saying about the anti-hero thing. A character like that can get annoying if it's overdone, but in this case it worked for me.

But I'm positive there are more Jesse fans out there, it's not like he's an unlikeable character!

reply

I also preferred Jesse.

reply

I preferred him as well, he really looked to Mark like a father, he was really likable

reply

well, i hadn't already stated my opinion on this thread. don't star threads unless you are prepared to read opinions you may not agree to.

Louise, I thought we settled this a few months ago: I started the topic back in May, and your reply was the first one recorded--I replied to that reply back in June. I'm sorry if I offended you with that comment (and I have to admit, I may have come across as a bit snippy) but in a later post when I referred to your first reply, I made sure to mention that you had replied in a civil manner, which I appreciated. Looking back, I think I replied to you initially as I did because I was slightly annoyed that the first response on my thread came from a Jack fan, who had already expressed an opinion, even if it was in another thread. As a matter of fact, I do believe it was that very post of yours that spurred me to start the "Anybody else here..." topic. But again, I apologize for my snippy tone.

I certainly didn't/don't expect everybody to agree with my opinion (gads, how boring endless yea-saying would be!), and if you read a bit further on, you may have noticed that I eventually conceded that Jack was better suited to the seasons/series he co-starred in than Jesse would have been. Here's what I said on that subject:

It seems to me that while Scott Baio was well-suited to the earlier seasons (in Denver), Charlie Schlatter was better-suited to the later ones (in L.A.).

So IMO having such different supporting characters was ultimately good, because it gave the show overall more variety in style and tone than it might otherwise have had.

I do confess, I am a bit curious as to why you would wait until November to protest a comment I made in June.

If we die for them, Harry, I'm going to KILL YOU!

reply

Yes. Really enjoy watching him. Like that his character is different from that of Scott Baio. Enjoyed watching Scott Baio a lot but Charlie created a fun to watch character.

reply

I appreciate all these replies (even those that don't agree with me, LOL), and I just thought of something: if Jesse had been on the show to begin with, I don't think I would have enjoyed his character then as much as I do now. It seems to me that while Scott Baio was well-suited to the earlier seasons (in Denver), Charlie Schlatter was better-suited to the later ones (in L.A.).

I agree. Like M*A*S*H. When Harry Morgan took over as a new character to fill the void of the character of Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) being killed off, he did a fantastic job! He created a new character all his own. Same with Wayne Rodgers leaving as Trapper John and the writers created the character of BJ Hunnicutt to be Hawkeye's new partner. Mike Farrell came at a good time. Loved all four actors and their characters!! ALL of the M*A*S*H character changes were a success. So was the Scott/Charlie change! Both actors were great.

reply

I liked Jessie alot more. The actor added more vulnerability to the role. I mean, I know it's not Shakespeare....but I still can appreciate decent acting when I see it.

reply

Count me as a Jesse fan. When I started watching DM in the 90's it was the Jesse seasons and I only watched some of the s1 & s2 episodes in the last few years. And they were ok but not as good as s3 onwards. Jack was ok but Jesse is much more fun and a more likeable character. S3 seems to have a different feel/look to it compared to the first two. Even the lighting seems different. Anyway Jesse!

reply

Exactly.

Everything about the first two seasons looks weird.

It looks so dated.

The show became what it became from S3 onwards.

Plus the stories got better too.

me. even long before he join D.M. I was gaga for the guy...this, of course goes back to Heartbreak Hotel and 18 Again. needless to say, whenever I was at my grandmother's (rest her soul) I loved watching this with her...along with a few others we could agree on.

the true Oscar Miss. playing along with The Academy since Rain Man.

reply

Yes, me too! I love the Jesse character and the actor that portrays him. At first, I was disappointed that Scott Baio left the series, but I soon fell in love with Jesse and forgot all about Jack 😋

reply

The first seasons were *beep* imo.

And wtf was up with that big black woman?

She was terrible.

reply

I was more of a Jesse fan, though I also liked Jack. I think they both worked well for their roles.

Truck or Squad. What side are you on?

reply

Since she was brought up, here's what was up with Delores Hall...she was a musical stage actress. They had her on the show in case a musical number broke out, so Dick would have someone to sing with. She does a great rendition of Get Happy at the close of the Murder at the Telethon episode.

reply

I wouldn't say I was a fan but my Wife liked him and after watching the show again I think he was better than Scott Baio.

reply

Have you seen Charlie Schlatter in Heartbreak Hotel (1988) Cute movie. He plays the son of Tuesday Weld.

reply

I know, answering in 2016...  I love Jesse, and I could not stand Jack. I started watching it when Scott had already left, and Charlie was there. Jesse was a sweet character, and I loved the way he was with Mark.

No more GA!
