A quick question about Steve's age on the show.

Does anyone know how old Steve is in the show. I'm trying to figure it out still.

Barry van Dyke is born 1951. The show was running from 1993 - 2001. Do the math xD

i think his character was probably meant to be younger than his actual age. just as I imagine Dr sloan was meant to be somewhat younger than Dick ban Dyke's actual age. i would guess their characters were both meant to be about 10 years younger than their actual ages.

You are talking about the actor's age. The question is about the character's age. Too many people believe the characters are always supposed to be the same age as the actors portraying them.

Surely every person should believe any character is the age of the actor unless the character's age is explicitly stated! After all it's the actor we see on the screen not a script...

I can see where you would be confused. I am 54 and have way fewer facial wrinkles than he did. I am guessing he spent way more time in the sun than I do.

In the season one episode, Vanishing Act, Mark and Steve are sharing a bathroom when Mark makes a critical remark about Steve's shaving technique - to which Steve replies saying he'd been shaving for twenty years.

So, that puts him in his mid-thirties at the start of the show. Barry, on the other hand, was forty-three.

This was no so in the case of Mark. Mark was sixty-six when Dick Van Dyke was sixty-eight.

I have no doubt that Mark was only two years younger than Dick when the series started, but after a few seasons they must have decided to make him a bit younger. Based on the back story of the Season 8 episode Sins of the Father I would guess that Mark was about ten years younger than Dick by then.

Saw Barry very recently and he's still incredibly handsome in his 60s!!
