Katie Ka-boom: Psychological

I wonder what type of mental disorder Katy Kaboom had. I think she had bi-polar or borderline personality disorder.

It's actually spelled "Asperger". Honest mistake, though.

Oh, sorry! I thought I'd seen your post spelling it with a "b" instead of a "p".

My fault, I apologize.

I've been in a class with people with Asperger, so I know that some of them can be easily pissed off (That made me think of Katie!).

I actually had a friend with Asperger's Syndrome, and I'd noticed that the slightest thing set him off and it seemed almost impossible to calm him down, so yeah, that's a very interesting comparison to Katie's "condition".

Definitely not just you!

As a kid (back in 1993-1994), I never would've gotten the comparison (since I didn't meet him until at least 1998...), but after watching these cartoons recently, I've caught the similarity.

Interestingly, as I type this message, I'm watching a "Katie Ka-Boom" cartoon right now. Call Waiting, to be precise.

I never saw those shorts when I was younger.. not until when I saw the re-runs in '06...!

Wow, I didn't know they re-ran the show in 2006! What network?

I've have a family member that has asperger and yeah, some of them can be easily angry, but that, like you say, Madde, very individually. Some of them who have asperger are shy, but also very, very nice people.

Hey, stuff happens! At least you're a good sport about it. I just thought it was kind of funny, but I was half expecting a really angry reply. Some people flip out over nothing, you know? So, thanks for having a sense of humor!

I don't think Katie Ka-boom had any kind of "mental disorder" at all; I think her overblown reactions were just hyperbolic representations of teenage mood swings. A person doesn't have to have a "disorder" to be tempermental.

Yes, I agree. My father used to say one of his sisters was precisely like Katie as a teenager, always blowing up (not literally) over the smallest things, and she didn't have any disorders; she was just being a high-strung teenage girl. I think a lot of teenagers' parents could relate to the Katie cartoons.

Man, I love the Katie Ka-Boom, I liked the way how she gets ticked off, I would say she has some kind of rare-form of explosive PMS.

reply

I agree completely with lagrammairienne and Baravelli_the_ice_lady . I think it would actually be wrong to laugh at the cartoons if she were in fact mentally ill. They would be sad, actually! The whole point is that she is just a teenage drama queen who over reacts to everything because she is a mess of teenage angst and raging adolescent hormones.

According to the DVD extras it was Nicholas Hollander who came with her and he indeed based her on his own daughter.

She was just a typical/stereotypical? teenager.

reply

I am beginning to think it's possible, The Incredible Hulk may had been part influence behind Katie Ka-Boom.

reply

I use to think it was hilarious, when she explode. I actually personally when I had PMS would get real angry and sometimes I throw things. People would say I was PMS's and I would say like No I'm not and then like whithin 2 or 3 days, I'd have my period. Ha! You can get real moody as a teenager, it is the hormones.

I do have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Schizo-effective disorder, a form of Schizophrenia, that I take meds for. If I encountered some one who really was that angry easy, I would be scared.

I never really got into her stuff as a kid.

I like her skits now that I'm older.
