First seasons vs last two seasons

The first 3 seasons or so were fantastic. Easily some of teh best cartoons I have ever seen.

But what happened in the last two seasons? I knwo shows age and they run out of ideas but the show really went downhill. I remember loving it and then teh next year was almost unwatchable. Did somebody leave the staff or did the show just run its course?

Per Wikipedia: Season 1 consisted of 65 episodes. Fox then ordered a new, short season, consisting of 4 episodes quickly put together from unused scripts from the previous season. The show then switched from Fox Kids to Kids' WB, with 13 episodes in Season 3. However, Animaniacs was only successful in an unintended way, bringing in adult viewers and viewers outside the Kids' WB target demographic of young children. This unintended result of adult viewers and not enough young viewers put pressure on the WB network from advertisers and caused dissatisfaction from the WB network towards Animaniacs. Slowly, orders from the WB for more Animaniacs episodes dwindled and they made it through a couple more short seasons, relying on leftover scripts and storyboards. Season 4 had eight episodes, which was reduced from 18 because of the WB's dissatisfaction with the show. (Season 5 had nine more.)
So there you have it, past the original 65-episode season it was mostly running on fumes. Still, there are a few gems here and there, like "Bully For Skippy" and "Jokahontas".

Got it. That makes total sense. However how dumb is that network? They have a hit albveit with a different demographic, and they just couldnt adjust. Speaks volumes for their management abilities.

Blame Jamie Kellner... he axed Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, AND Freakazoid, pretty much all at the same time. Even today shows like Young Justice or Sym-Bionic Titan get cancelled because the toys they're meant to promote aren't selling well.

Part of the problem with Animaniacs being a "kids" show is that most of the great humor was lost on the kiddies, but picked up by the Gen Xer's, thus nobody made money.
