Sidney actually explains it in the movie:
"If you could count you'd be an astronaut"
-"Hey Gary "your mothers an astronaut"
~"Leave my momma outta this"
-"Me sayin' your mothers an astronaut is just another way of sayin' your all *beep* up"
That's it :-)
But a logic interpretation would be, that she's nicknamed "Astronaut", because she just takes up space :-)
All these voices in my head, and not a single one I understand.
