Sydney`s business - real or hustle?

Remember the part where gloria leaves billy then they show sydney rolling up in his car surounded by mexicans looking for work. They he meets up with a white man that wanted some plaster work done or something. Sydney then charges him 300 dollars "to get started". Was this a hustle or wtf???

I'm afraid it didn't look entirely sincere, although his wife seems the type that wouldn't like being with him if he didn't have atleast one proper job.
Ambigous I say.

If Little Red Riding Hood shows up with a bazooka an a bad attitude I expect you to chin the bitch

for 16 years i've wondered the same thing.. he obviously didn't have a bank account cuz he kept $5000 in his house and his wife kept complaining of him getting them out of that housing complex, but he was supposedly a succesful business man.. never understood that.

I always thought it was a legitimate business. One of his "many" side jobs".

I dint think he is that sucessful. He probably does anything he can for a buck.

The thing that puzzles me.... those tiles the guy is looking at.... where did they come from? Does Sidney have a table there someone else puts out for him next to a take-away window, or what?

The customer probably brought them with him and set them up. Sidney would've given him samples to take home and the guy brought them back when he'd decided which ones he wanted.

He probably did good work, but since he could work without a permit, he wasn't totally legit. My take on it was that he had a niche in cutting corners to get the job done for less than a legit contractor.

If you're not responding to me, "reply" to the post you're responding to. kthanks.

I thought hewasn't hustling in this case and that he was just good at his side job. I mean, if a white guy trusts Sidney in that situation, then that must mean he got to know about Sidney by word of mouth. Sidney can't afford to hustle whites like this on top of ripping off bastketball players during free time. He gets away with that becuase he is clever and because his fellow blacks respect the law of the street, a bet is a bet. But if he did the same thing in the corporate world, they would bust him sooner or later. His goal, however, was to start over a regular life.

I'm less confused by whether Sydneys business is legit (Im sure its cash based and no permits, etc..) than I am how a "legit" customer comes to find Sydney in the first place.

It was as legitimate as Sydney got. Straight cash transactions, nothing really documented and he didn't have proper permits. He was an entrepreneur though, looking for the best ways to make money. He had a ton of side jobs like he said.

The Mexicans were waiting there because they knew who he was and he hires them to do the work for him. He sets up the deals and then pays the Mexicans. This is why they were waiting for him and greeted him right away looking for any work he had available.
