the only thing I remember about this movie is Gloria's secret and not so secret drinking problem. Was this in any way resolved? My memory of it it just stops being mentioned or addressed, nor does it really have anything to do with anything. Or am I wrong?
shareI wondered this myself. It was quite a big point in the movie, at least I thought. But then again, it wasn't a film about alcoholism. It's been a long time since I've seen the film but maybe it was resolved??? I honestly don't remember.
shareIt's been a long time since I've seen it as well, but back in the day I have seen the movie a couple of times and I don't even remember Gloria having a drinking problem. Unless you mean the "glass of water" scene ...

I just saw the movie for the first time over the weekend. I thought it really out of place that she shot off to get a swig from the bottle when Woody was in the shower. Drinking almost didn't come up again outwith her and Sidney's wife being in the kitchen discussing the money situation and how to resolve it.
It seemed a very odd part of the story to me indeed.

I think they put it in the story to highlight the differences between them. Not just background, philosophical, money-handling differences but this too. I get impression that Billy didn't drink at all (Preacher father, etc..).
Its just Just one more brick in the difference pile, foreshadowing their eventual split maybe.
