I agree with the both of you. When i first saw that i started to well up but then once they showed Little J being released from jail and For What It's Worth started playing i cried like there was no tomorrow. I felt like i was having a nervous breakdown. For a while i couldn't listen to that song because it always reminded me of that part and it was the same for You Can Sleep While I Drive. I've told a couple of people about this movie and that if they had netflix they should add it to their list because thats where i discovered it. They all have yet to see it. I think more people should know about this movie its definatly an underrated gem.

I just got this movie and I have to agree with all of you, it's truly a gem. Every character in this movie was excellant and Dermot was beyond amazing. I heard he won a best actor award at the Seattle International Film festival for his portrayal of King. If he did it was well deserved. This one is in my top 10 list for sure! I cried so hard when he got killed. I guess that's the only part I didn't like. I never like it when Dermot's character gets killed but the movie was a great little film. The music was awesome.
This movie is definitely an overlooked gem. Even if someone can't get into the storyline, the acting was superb. From the stars to the secondary characters to the cameos, all good actors.
Most of the characters in the movie were under the age of 35 but all were professionals and very convincing. Can you image if this movie was remade today with actors in the same age group, 17-35? With most being from 20-25. I can't imagine the film makers could find enough good ones.
Well, maybe if they went with a cast of "unknowns". People who are good actors but just never got the chance to be in a big movie.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.share
Wow, it's been so long since I posted on this board that I was a bit surprised when I got a message that womeone responded to one of my posts. I have to agree, that the pool of young actors is very limited right now but there are some good actors out there, they may not have names you'd recognize but they're there! If you watch INDY movies you see some pretty great talent. I just wish they would release some of the movies Dermot has had in the can for a while. I know he's busy directing now and with his new family so he probably will concentrate more on directing etc... but he's got 3 films that are finished, that I know of, that have never been released. Sure would like to have a chance to see them.

Yes, this movie was horribly sad and so realistic. There are kids like them growing up in a world like ours today. It's so sad because half of them want it that way, or for other reasons.
Yes, the very end was a killer....so saaaaaaaaad!

I've only seen this movie once and yes, cried my eyes out. And I don't usually cry over movies.
shareas an ex-addict of a certain drug myself. i found the sean astins part to extremely terrifyingly convincing. it was absolutely heart-wrehcing seeing him ruin his chances at rehab and end up just another one of kyle machalans dead customers. i really wanted to see him get clean. never mind crying to the movie. i threw up a little after sean astin died. ask any addict you know and he would tell you why. also i couldnt get the opening song out of my head for days. usually i watch a new dvd every night, but it took me three days to get over this one. because i just couldnt accept seans death. having said that. this is only a movie and a *beep* excellent one at that. seriously people, listen to kings comment at the end, and please please please take it to heart. because he is right. im not going to say the comment(hopefully no-one else will either pweez!) because i want peeps to watch it first hand for themselves. this was way-overlooked and should have won an oscar for best cinematography, sound & sean astins part for best male. i bet you the only reason why it didnt was because of the big drug theme and homless kids.
shareHey - if you guys like this movie, check out another unknown: "Spun".
The late (and once very promising, amazing) Britany Murphy (sp) was in it. It wasn't her best work, but she does what she has to.
"Spun" is in the same 'vein' as "Where the Day Takes You", but is more 2000s - less on emotion and seeing the value of people, and more raw and brutal (not that it's extremely violent or anything).
I liked "Spun" a great deal. I enjoyed "Where the Day..." but I don't remember crying. I will have to check out this movie again - it's been years.
There is a sad scene near the end of "Spun" - the original comment in this thread had me thinking of THAT one, by mistake.
Thanks.
It was very depressing.
